The birdseed says "wild bird food" and has pictures of a few kinds of birds, including cardinals, but the only kind of bird that i ever see there are house sparrows
(this kind) http://www.flickr.com/photos/bpdragon/2291046195/
However i regularly see robins, woodpeckers, cardinals, and common grackles. Why is it that only sparrows use my bird feeder?

I just heard it not long ago, around 5 in the morning. I’ve heard the call before, and my memory seems to be connecting it with an owl I once saw… though, I can’t find any lists of owls in my area to search for sound clips, so it’s difficult. :/
I live in a fair sized industrial city, in Southern Ontario… so it’s not often I see more than house wrens, starlings, blue jays, mourning doves, pigeons, cardinals, sea gulls and crows. Our wildlife is very limited.
Anyway, it’s still very dark and the morning chorus hasn’t been sounding for long. Started up shortly after I heard this call. I want to say the bird has a good chance of being nocturnal, but really… I don’t know enough to make such assumptions.
I’m going to try to describe this in as much detail as possible.
The call would last for about 6 seconds, pause for closer to 10, then it would sound again.
The sound it would make was somewhere between a very repetitive gentle hoot and a coo.
It repeated quickly, maybe 4 times per second, no pause between the sounds.
The pitch was a little bit higher than a mourning dove’s.
The volume was pretty low. Very eerie. I’m not sure if the bird was distant, or if it was just soft.
If my memory serves me right, then the other times in the past that I heard the call would have been between 9 PM and Midnight.
That’s… about all I can give you.
Any ideas whatsoever will help. Maybe it’s not an owl at all? I’ll be looking up every suggestion to try and confirm.

I moved all your things. You now have your own place in a better neighborhood. A large pickett fence on approximately 3 acres. There is a swimming pool in the backyard. You have to go about 100 ft. from the house to get to it. I set a several hummingbird feeders and two birdhouses about 500 ft back there and now there are hummingbirds everywhere. You have a new job making 220,000 a year. I bought you a new jeep. Are you happy?

I discovered something about my great great great great aunt who was alive back in the 1870s and I can’t believe it is true! My brother has gotten into genealogy and discovered that she was a slave during this time. Now first of all, there is no African American in my blood, and second of all, slavery was abolished in the 1860s. I am not naive, I know slavery exists today, but I haven’t gotten to the weird part yet…
…supposedly she was a sex slave to a saloon owner in an old western town, but she was not a whore. She was just HIS personal slave by night, but by DAY, he used her to attract customers to his saloon! This is the weird part.
He re-named his saloon, "The Bird in the Gilded Cage" Casino, and he actually kept her…no joke…in a giant round birdcage hanging over a bar…LITERALLY! My brother and cousin even took me to the old casino and showed me the birdcage. It was big enough to fit a person inside, but had all the features of a normal birdcage-a swing, a perch, even a wooden bird feeder mounted between the bars. The swing was even wide enough for my ancestor to sit on it.
Now of course, I know anything was possible back then but this is like something out of a movie. Supposedly, during the day, the saloon owner made her wear skimpy outfits and locked her in the birdcage to attract male customers to the saloon. At night, he let her sleep in bed with him, but she was in bondage. At any rate, I guess she literally LIVED in a birdcage for over seven years of her life before the saloon owner died and she was set free.
Could that really be real? I saw the cage, but I just can’t believe it.

I want a wooden bird feeder that maybe the top comes off or rises so I can fill with seeds.I’ve tried a nearby craft store. They have ones that are basically decorative. I want an unfinished one so I can have my 2 yr old help me paint it. I tried The Home Depot & the lady said no. I know one can be built (didn’t really want to but I guess will if I have to).
I would like a simple one if it has to be built. Any good ideas how to go abt doing that or does anyone have any patterns to make one?
Thanks.
