Mei was leaping and bounding through the tall savannah grass, the rays of sun dancing along the ground, making a warm path for her. She was calmed, and relaxed, there were no animals about, which was quite unusual. Only a small flock of black an brown birds. They were squaking quietly, and the sound seemed calming to Mei. She loved it here, in Kenya. How it was sunny everyday, how there were animalss basically everywhere, elephants, zebras, lions and more. she began to lie down on the soft grass, happily watching the birds in the light blue sky……..
Loud squaking peirced through the air like knives. Mei violently jolted awake. There were hundreds of black birds in the air now, they covered a space of the sky making it look like a black blanket was spread over it.they seemed distressed and the loud squaking continued, the noise ringing in her ears. "Wait, what!" she muttered to herself. then she noticed what was wrong.
In the distance, she could see the sky was a thick dark grey, smoke everywhere…and it was coming from a house….her house!

the 3 year old was screaming for his mum, probably wanting food, and Mei couldnt take the noise anymore. She decided to go out to the village.
"mum, I’m going out to the village" she told her mother
"Okay honey" she replied, happy for Mei to get out of the house. She was stressed out and, frankly, if she was out it would be one less mouth to feed. " Just be careful, and take your phone with you"
"Okaaayy!!" said Mei, rolling her eyes. Why must she always be so protective?
Grabbing her mobile phone, Mei ran out of the big, fancy, wooden house.It was newly built, and quite expensive too. Mei glanced up at the wooden balcony on the second floor of her house, the one she loved to go out on. She could see for miles from it, could see all of the gorgeous plains and the beautiful animals on them.
She started to walk towards the nearest village; it was only about fifteen minutes away. The walk didnt take her long as she walked briskly, eager to get to the village to meet some of her friends from school and to get some new clothes.
When she arrrived, she was greeted by an array of mixed races and genders of people. Some were the natives, who had lived in Africa all their lives, others came from all around the world, moving to Kenya with their parents. Mei had came here from Seattle. She had liked Seattle, and the many shops, and her friends back there, but it was far better in Kenya. She had made new friends anyways.
"hey Mei!" shouted her best girlfriend, Alison, or Aly for short.
"hiyah Aly!" trilled Mei, beaming.
All of her other friends were talkign amung themselves, and muttered some greetings.
The village, Numbaee, was a nice little village, with small, colourful, cute houses and a friendly neighbourhood. The shops were small but open and clean. The stray dogs and cats in the neighbourhoood always looked healthy and happy, unlike some of the stray animals Mei had seen, half-dead and flea-infested creatures that roamed the allyways of Seattle.
"So, lets get going then" said another one of Mei’s friends, Alice.
The group began to make their way to the centre of Numbaee, which was small but homey and welcoming.
After shopping for about an hour and saying their farewells to each other, Mei began her jourmey home. She should geet home soon before her mum got worried, there was quite a bad reception out in the plains.

She watched for a while as tongues of fire licked the sides of her house, as it began to collapse. Suddenly she was finding it hard to breathe, and huge clouds of grey smoke were clouding her vision. "NO!" she shouted
"nooo…." she breathed, her voice failing, "no…"
A bright yellow light awoke Mei. She looked around, and she appeared to be in a small, cream room. The walls were painted a creamy beige colour, a warm, comforting colour, and there was a large, colourful rug taking up most of the room ont he wooden floor. The rug had animals on it, and loads of colours, and it reminded Mei of the clothes that the old African women in the village made. Mei was liying on a comfortable, simple sofa and there was a small, old fashioned TV in the corner of the room.

She was wearing a shawl and under it a long African printed dress, and, like the rug, it was red with splashes of brown, gold, green and yellow, and it seemed to be printed with animals and other things. She looked like she was in her fifties.
" hello dear" she said in a soft, calming voice. She smiled at Mei and handed her a bowl of water and a peice of cloth, " wash your face and hands… you are a bit mucky!"
Mei looked down at her hands, and they were covered with suit. her face must be too!
"ew" Mei muttered, and the woman just smiled even more.
Strangely, even though this place, and the woman, was entirely unfamiliur, Mei felt safe, happy, at home. She roughly scrubbed at her face and hands.
"thanks" she murmured.
"Welcome" said the friendly African woman "Are you okay? you took quite a fall! You inhaled some smoke, and fainted. Did you hurt your head…?"
"No, I’m fine" Mei reassured her " But…my house! my parents!"
"Ooh…" said the woman. She looked quite unhappy, and paused for a second, choosing her words. " Well, your parents are fine. Im so sorry that i cant say the same about your house, it is a pile of rubble at the moment. This fire, honey, was no accident, it was planned. Your mother and father, and you brother, escaped just in time. They are now in hiding"
" WHAT!" demanded Mei, " In hiding! Where? From who? hiding from who? the fire. Planned! But, who, I-"
"Stop" said the woman firmly, holding up a hand. " Listen, child. My name is Rosanna. You have no memory of me, as you have never met me. But I have been a friend of your family for years. I have never met you because your parents thought it best that i had nothing to do with your family for the time being, they have spies, see. Your mother thought it was a good idea that i should stay here and, well, keep watch, on your house and to look out for the spies. and to keep a watch on you. And it was good that i was here, should anything happen, like what jsut happened now. Your parents were very lucky"

But, the organisation, well,, they will stop at nothing to get their hands on the precious items that remain in your parent’s possession. While your parents are in hiding, you shall be staying here with me, and you shall go to school as normal, but never, i mean never, mention any of this to anyone"
" okay…" mei sighed. she was having a hard time taking all this information in. Whoa! she thought. this really was a lot to take in. No house, she couldn’t see her parents, none of her items…. " how long will i be with you?"

Okay, then, thought Mei. So this is it. This was certainly gonna be a boring period of time. she was already missing her family terribly, and worrying about them.
" Do I get to see my family?" she asked, depressed
"no" said Rosanna " I’m sorry, but its for the best."
Rosanna then went through to another room of the small thatched house. It was obviously the kitchen- there was a delicious, mouth-watering smell wafting over from the room. This reminded Mei of how desperately hungry she was! Her stomached growled in longing, but she stayed put. Rosanna then walked slowly over with a tray full of food- potatoes,
chicken, vegetables and soup. And also some yellow-white juice that smelled of lemons. Lemonade.
"wow!" mei gasped
"all for you!2 chuckled Rosanna " help yourself, have whatever you want"
"Mmmmh! Did you make this?" mei asked as she shoveled mounds of bread and cheese into her mouth.
"yes" smiled Rosanna
"Wow, its delicious!" mei said, her voice muffled because of the food she was eating.
Rosanna just smiled and truned her attention to some sort of sitcom that was playing on the television.
Suddenly, there was a banging on the door. A loud banging… getting loudeer, and louder. Someone was at the door!
Rosanna’s face was a mask of horrror.
" oh NO! THEY’VE CAME!" she whispered urgently " hide, hide!"
Rosanna helped Mei get into a large hole in the wall, with a kind of door that blended into the walls. It was vry uncomfortable and dark. She could hear mufled sounds, she could hear the men come in, she could smell the gun powder. She could hear the diying screams of Rosanna as she was shot. She could hear the loud noise of the gun.
She could hear them coming for her.

I can’t do much about a garden, since I still live with my parents, and I’m only 13. But so I’ve read in a lot about fairies. I know they like to be called wee folk or good folk, since fairies are an offensive name to them. And that they like little bird baths with pretty rocks.
So this is what I’ve done so far outside my house, I’ve left a tulip out for them to use for their baby’s bed, and wrote a note, Enjoy! Love, (my name)
Then I got out my mom’s old angel, bird bath, pond thing and filled it with fresh, clean water and set pretty rocks in some places. Then the stone angel is holding a leaf, so instead of filling it with water I filled it with flower petals, bright flowers, and pretty leaves. I’m going to go to the store and buy a bird house and paint it pretty colors and decorate it and put little doll furniture inside. I’m also going to the small forest in a golf course and bring some honey and milk for them to nurish on.

Is there anything else I can do to attract the wee folk? And befriend them? Thanks!
