A question about nesting?

June 1, 2010 Bird House Feeder

I had 2 birds competing for one nestbox in my yard. First, the tufted titmice were there. Then, about 3 days ago, I saw some annoying house wrens going into the box. I tried everything (including wren guards) to keep them out, but they still found a way to get in there. So, after noticing for 3 days that the house wrens were going in there and fearing that my chickadee’s nest would be there next target, I decided to place a trap over the entrance hole to move the birds far away from my yard ( I know I can’t kill them). But today I caught a tufted titmouse?

What’s going on? Are both species using the same nestbox? The only species that I’ve seen going in and out of the box are the house wrens.

Either could be using the box….the titmice may have been kicked out by the House Wrens or just decided to nest elsewhere, or the titmice may be using it and the wrens are just being nosey and checking things out..or perhaps poking holes in the titmice eggs. I have often seen different cavity nesting birds going into each others nests..which has confused me in the past as well, but I think they just check cavities to see if they are occupied or not.

Believe it or not house wrens like to be in nest boxes and even though you designed it for your birds the house wrens like it and they are staying you should just build another area for your birds. Good Luck
