Bird Safe Cleaning Supplies?

April 30, 2010 Bird House Feeder

With all those gross cleaning supplies that are taking over the grocery shelves and harming our pets, it’s hard to keep my parrot out of harms way of my cleaning supplies. I put my parrot in her outdoor enclosure and send her outside, till I cant smell the cleaning products. Do any of you have any good ideas to clean that are environmentally friendly and safe for my bird to be inside my house while I clean? Even homemade cleaning products is great!

A lot of people use a solution of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water. It stinks (although the smell is not harmful like with other cleaners), but it’s 100% bird safe and environmentally friendly, and dissolves bird poop almost effortlessly.

For a better smelling but equally effective alternative I’ve heard of people using lemon juice in place of vinegar.

I agree there aren’t too many products you can safely use around birds. Vinegar and water ,baking soda , lemon juice are all good. Mrs Murphy’s oilsoap is non toxic although I m not too crazy about the smell. Original formula Dove dishwashing soap would be good . Learn to read lables . Get yourself some generic baby wipes and use them for quick cleanups in and around your cages. My avian vet uses window cleaner to clean off her bird scales. One of those small steam cleaners might be a solution for you.
