bird trying to get in house?

There has been a cardinal that has been trying for almost a month to get into my house. Mainly he has been trying in the florida room, where I have other birds. Today, is trying to get in through the bathroom window. It is a bit unnerving. This is not the first time a bird has been trying to get in… another time there was a dove, and he tried through various windows in the house. I have even taken some pictures of him as he walked along the windowsills. Very strange. But this cardinal is being very persistant (like I said, almost a month now, and in all kinds of weather) and I just wonder why he is doing this?

Hummingbirds are fun, entertaining, full of energy and it’s easy to attract hummingbirds.
cardinals are very territorial. chances are its a male cardinal ie bright red. he sees his reflection in the glass and thinks its another bird. you might want to see on the web if there is something u can hang on the glass to distract him like ribbons or such.
What would happen if you put up a "scare crow" of sorts, like animal cut outs of commerically produced artifical animals around the window sills. It shoukld scare off the birds.
maybe he likes your florida room. i would just let him in and see what it does.

I hate to say it, but I’ve had the exact same problem for about a month. There is a cardinal that will spend the entire day throwing itself against the bathroom window. I assume it’s a male cardinal, and it only happens during the day? They are very territorial, and they are seeing their reflections in the window. They are also not very bright, and very persistent. He thinks he’s fighting off another cardinal! The funniest part was one time I saw a female cardinal look in–he was behind her, off to the side and I swear she gave him a look like, "You’re crazy–I don’t see another male!"
I agree with the two answers that Cardinals are very territorial. He is seeing his reflection. It is mating season and this is probably why the bird is like this. I Wonder though why the dove unless it is young. Most doves will mate for life unless the dove is thinking the same way seeing his reflection. Try to get something so the birds do not see their reflection.
