Chickadee eggs haven't hatched, mom still sitting?

July 10, 2010 Bird House Feeder

Outside we have a little bird house (originally for decoration) but about a month ago a momma chickadee decided to build her nest in there. She’s very good about letting us peek in through the hole, never gets up and flies away (we don’t tamper with anything, just peek)

So once when she was out getting food we look inside and see 4 little eggs sitting there! This was about three weeks ago, and I read online that it takes about two weeks for the eggs to hatch. Momma’s still on the unhatched clutch. Will chickadees sit on a bad clutch or can the eggs hatch unusually late? Will she stop sitting on them after a certain amount of time?

It is possible that the eggs are infertile or the temperature wasn’t right and they won’t hatch. The mother will sit on them some more but if they don’t hatch soon she’ll just give up and abandon the eggs.
