We just built them, painted them and mounted them on trees. Is there anything else we should do?

Hi Figato,
Just be patient – you will get birds. It takes them awhile to get used to the new houses. This is a good time of year in the US to get birds to nest.
Good luck, they will come.

The paint may be a problem – the smell can be toxic to birds and they will avoid it.
Don’t tell you cat where you put the nests for the birds.
All birds to not migrate(nest) in the same direction. Depending on the birds that frequent your abode, you have to angle and position the "houses" accordingly.
the pain might be the problem because the smell is toxic or the color is too bright.it also needs to be in a high place and mostly in a tree, because that is so they can keep safe from other birds.
good luck!!
Put the house in a location that affords protection outside the house like trees. Also provide some bird seed for them. And I agree about the paint. Go natural. (I’ve never seen a bird’s nest that was painted!)
put some grass clippings or hay inside the house, also have a bird feeder near by.and a bird bath might help too!good luck!
try putting bird feeders around the bird houses, obviously it would attract the birds, but other than that, i dont think theres much else you can do!
ill warn ya, bird houses are perfect homes for a new bee hive!
so if you love where bee live, just keep an eye out.
