I want to keep larger birds away from my goldfinch feeder. How high & wide should the holes in the cage be?
May 20, 2010 Bird House Feeder
I want to build a cage around my goldfinch feeder in order to keep out sparrows, house finches, chickadees, etc. I know that goldfinches are like 5 inches long, but none of the bird sites tell how tall upright the bird is (or even how wide its body is, for that matter). That’s why I have no idea how tall or wide the spaces between the bars should be. Please help. I will vote the first answer with the exact measurements needed as the best answer, earning you of course 10 points.

Hummingbirds are fun, entertaining, full of energy and it’s easy to attract hummingbirds.

I found plans for a goldfinch house that calls for a 1 1/2" entry hole. I think 1 1/4" would be big enough.
