December 27, 2010 Bird House Feeder

one of my neighbor have their cats strolling around sometimes and I’m worried if they are going to scare the wild birds away. before I move to the current house I always have bird feeder, bath, etc since I was little and I don’t want to stop NOW.

That is one of the biggest problems with people letting cats roam. They are natural predators and will certainly not be good to have around. Still, birds are pretty aware of their surroundings. You could give it a try in an area of the yard that is easily visible and I’m thinking there may be plants that will deter cats somewhat. You might google that.

First of all, cats are always a worry to birds because they are natural predators to our feathered friends. Why not secure the yard a tad so that the felines that do roam can’t get anywhere near the birds sanctuary you want to make? Once the yard is secure, the kitties will give up on trying to catch a mid day snack. They will always look for a way to get in, but if you’re going to secure it, make sure it’s both escape proof and break in proof.

Although you won’t always get to keep the cat’s out, it will aid in keeping them away. That’s the only thing you can do. Another good idea is water. Cat’s HATE water. Why not keep some sprinklers on near the bird rest and bird baths so that they stay away? Birds on the other hand love water. They will run around in soft water sprays and bath too! As a result the birds get their fun bath and the kitties stay away from the dreaded water!

Another idea would be installing a bird bath which has water at the base. Like a water bath in the middle of a small pond? The cats wont bother trying to get to the birds because of the water feature and getting their paws wet. Other than that, cats from a distance is out of your control.
