April 1, 2011 Bird House Feeder

Okay so here’s the question, and answer choices. Can you tell me how you got the answer? Thanks.

"Jasmine is building birdhouses. It takes her 3.5 hours to build 4 birdhouses. Which of the following is an equivalent rate?"

A) 14 hours to build 18 birdhouses
B) 28 hours to build 35 birdhouses
C) 21 hours to build 28 birdhouses

Thanks a bunch. (:

  1. peabody says:

4 birdhouses are built in 3.5 hours

    1 birdhouses are built in 3.5/4 = 7/8 hours

    a) Rate = 14/18 = 7/9 <> 7/8

    b) Rate = 28/35 = 4/5 <> 7/8

    c) Rate = 21/28 = 3/4 <> 7/8

    None of the above.

  2. File_Swapper says:

Well.. 52 minutes and 30 seconds to build each birdhouse.

Maybe – A) 14 hours to build 18 birdhouses – is your closest answer.

But none of them are correct.

    3.5 hrs build 4 birdhouses.

    3.5 hrs = 210 minutes

    210 minutes divided by 4 = 52.5 or (52 minutes & 30 Seconds)

hey, i’m a college level engineer, and I honestly don’t think that any of these answers are correct. The way that you would get the answer is by dividing the number of birdhouses she makes by the number of hours it takes to make them to get a base rate. Then you would multiply that by the number of hours given in each multiple choice answer to get the number of birdhouses that she would make in the given number of hours. For answer A, she should make 16 houses in 14 hours as, (4 / 3.5) * 14 = 16.

  4. Rich says:

    3.5 / 4 = .875 hours each

    .875 times 18 = 15.75
    .875 times 35 = 30.625
    ,875 times 28 = 24.5

so none of them are the right answer

    good luck

  5. TomV says:

    Rate = 3.5/4 = 7/8 = 0.875 hours/birdhouse

    A) 14/18 = 7/9 = 0.778
    B) 28/35 = 4/5 = 0.800
    C) 21/28 = 3/4 = 0.750

Correct answer is none of the above.
