Or can the old nests be left in place?

Yes, all previous nesting material should be cleaned out of the birdhouse. Old nests can harbor many parasites that can harm birds. I spray a mild bleach/water solution in the houses after sweeping out the old nests to be sure they are clean.

Plus, the birds may not use a box that already has a nest in it. Nest building is an important part of bird’s instincts.

Wrens also have a funny habit of filling up boxes with little sticks so nobody else can use them. Those should be cleaned out as well, but wont need the bleach treatment.

    Hope this helps

Clean out and scald with boiling water to reduce mite infestation and other nasties.
