If left alone for the weekend, would it work?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

Thought of building a bird house for feral pigeons… or at least some kind of shelter and see if a pair builds a nest on the balcony of the town house I live in.

There’s a few pigeons that live in my neighborhood and I have read about pigeons who have built nests on people’s balconies.

I plan on using a wooden crate used for shipping/holding wine as a ‘nest box’ for a pair of pigeons.

The crates are 100% and don’t have any opening on the sides.

They’re a good size and are a bit deep. I think they’d be big enough. The crate wil be left on the balcony of the townhouse I live in.

I also plan to do this in the spring and set out bird seed and water on the balcony. One thing though…

I’m going to LA in May for 3 days or more so the house will probably be empty. I thought about setting the crate, bird seed & water on the balcony before I leave…

think if the stuff is left alone for that amount of time, would a pair of pigeons come?

no jokes, please…

try as i might, i can’t block out their angry chirping that starts at 3 in the morning & ends at 10 in the morning. i have a few ideas, like buying a bird feeder, filling it with rat poison, & hanging it up in the backyard of the abandoned house next door… but i’m not that evil, yet.
so i come to Y!A to seek the advise of countless strangers who may or may not have encountered such experience.

What cleaning product should be used to clean up bird droppings?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

I have 25 finches in one large cage. I moved them recently to a different part of the house. And I noticed the wall that was behind the cage is now covered in bird droppings & stuck on seeds. What should I clean that with without thinning the paint behind it?
Thanks I will try the water soaked paper towel idea.

Anyone know about back yard wild birds?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

We have tons of birds every year nest in our back yard. The last 2 years black snakes seem to have found us, so I don’t want to put my bird houses anywhere near anything that the snakes can climb to get to my birds.
I have several sheppard hooks that I plan to hang my bird houses on out in the middle of the yard away from bushes, trellises etc…this also means less protection from the house so the sun & rain will beat down on them. We live in the southeast, it gets hot & humid here.
Do you think the sheppard hooks are a good idea? If not, someone please let me know their ideas. Also, I have some plain wood bird houses in my garage that are more for a covered area but there’s such a mess under our canopy every year, can I Polyurethane them to make them more weather proof or will that hurt the birds?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Is this cage big enough for my 4 rats (2 hairless and 2 rex)??

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 9 Comments

I took out the wheel, because they get enough time out of their cage playing on my bed and with me each day. and they have one house to hide in, and a "cozy cup" thing, 3 hanging wooden bird toys, and 4 chew toys.
Is it big enough??

They are out of their cage, and with me, for at least 20 minutes each day, usually more. and they have tubes and tents, and crinkle tunnels when they play outside of their cage. And i use my hand and play "tag" with them, and wrestle with them.
They are definitly loved, i just wanna make sure their cage is big enough!!

Hummingbirds?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

I live in Indiana and in the summer ( or maybe spring) , some hummingbirds come to the feeder. I read an article in this magazine called " Birds & Blooms) and it said about these hummingbirds building nests in strange places, like ropes and windchimes. In the summer or spring , if I place a tiny little bird house ( because they check out anything my mom puts out there) will they lay eggs in it if they are interested in the birdhouse? Or it is not their egg-laying season yet in the summer, in Indiana?
