Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

The American Goldfinch feeding at my seed ball that is filled with black oil sunflower seeds. The Bright colors and the song or these Wild Canaries Are Like no other bird that comes to my feeders they add color and music to the yard. They are probably one of the easiest bird to attract to the yard just make sure that you offer plenty of clean fresh seed and a water source and you will have no problem keeping them around.

New birdhouses, when will the birds move in?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

I just recently built 3 bird houses and painted them key west style, they are very ornate, colorful, and fairly large. We have an acre in the backyard so I was wondering if hanging these will attract more birds, and if so, when will they move in? We are anxious to find out and hoping they don’t just look for a place to nest when they are ready to have eggs. Any input is welcome. Thanks!
it is a 2 inch hole (maybe 2 and a quarter) the houses are approximately 8×6 inches inside and approximately 8 inches tall, we live in north florida, just about 10 miles south of georgia and about 40 minutes north of jacksonville… we still get seasons here but maybe more birds when it gets colder up north? originally from long island, ny, last week will be our one year anniversary living here – - still trying to understand the local animals, lots of gopher turtles, lizards of all breeds, crocs, and birds (and people! ha ha)

Why do people let their cats roam and gets angry if anyone does anything!?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 17 Comments

We have 2 dogs and 2 potbellied pigs. Our yard is fenced in and we work hard to make sure our animals don’t bother no one else. We have bird feeders and houses everywhere because we love to see all the differant birds. But cats come over our fence and kill our baby birds. We have attracted them here and someone thinks their cat can just roam and kill what we have built as our sanctuary. I finally called the law and they said if any animal got into our yard that it was legal to shoot them. I tried telling our neighbors about this and they got angry. It’s alright that their cats kill our birds but we are not suppose to kill their cat? Doesn’t make much sense to me. Only seems fair. Their cat has no right in our yard when we have worked so hard to make sure our animals don’t get in theirs. Why do people think this is alright. I don’t hate carts, but I just don’t want them in my yard. Why don’t people with cats take on more responsibility for their pet? All people don’t want them!
One thing I do control my animals. They all have been trained. The pigs are cleaned up regularly and on their side of the fence there is no one that can live on that side but we do have a privacy fence there. But their yard is cleaned regularly. Our dogs our mainly inside and if not, they are in our yard. I do not see why people think I should put out money to control others peoples animals. We have our fence put up to control ours, and it mostly keeps other peoples animals out, except for cats out of control. And if I did have a cat it would be inside or on a leash because I will not let my animals bother anyone else. They are my babies. Because it is the only responsible thing to do. And when I said I talked to someone about this it was the sheriff. So I do believe he knows the law. Like I said I have nothing against cats and maybe one day I will have one. But I will be responsible with it considering my neighbors would proubly expect me to like I do the rest of them.

Is dryer lint safe to use in home-made bird feeders / houses?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

I was reading through some green articles a while back and saw that you can make a bird feeder or house with a milk carton.

The photos in the article had the homemade feeders/houses lined with lint from the dryer.

I know that lint breaks up very easily and is made of tiny foreign particles…is it possible that an animal could breathe the particles in and sustain an internal injury of some kind?

I know that this would be an excellent use for leftover lint, since all it does is pile up, but I don’t want to cause any animals a lung infection or anything…can’t have that on my conscience.

Any info? Thank you.

I was wondering if it would be safe for the birds to
Last line is a typo…tried to edit, but can’t seem to.

Anthony Marr to kids: How many think hunting is wrong? (Teach your children well)

How many of you think that killing animals for fun (hunting) is wrong?” asked Anthony Marr. ***** Children taught to extend justice, kindness, and mercy to animals become more just, kind and considerate in their relations with each other Character training along these lines will result in men and women of broader sympathies, more humane, more law-abiding in every respect more valuable citizens When you teach a child to be kind to animals, you help pave the way to a brighter future for all living beings Animals benefit because the next generation has learned to treat them with respect and compassion, reducing instances of animal cruelty Children benefit because learning about compassion and empathy early in life builds moral character, reduces violence, and builds a sense of empowerment and responsibility And society as a whole benefits when its members are more caring towards each other and the animals who live among us Unfortunately, not all children are taught to be kind to animals This gap may lead them to tease animals or otherwise disregard their feelings; in the worst cases, it can lead to acts of animal cruelty Animal cruelty is a heinous act punishable by law in every state, but in recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the link between animal cruelty and violence to other humans as well For instance, it’s often the case that children who commit animal cruelty have witnessed or been victims of abuse themselves: In roughly one-third of families

Bullock’s Oriole

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 8 Comments

It took me dozens of hours of tape over 3 successive Summers to get this little bit of video. The bird is paranoid and cagey to boot and Orioles seem to be a rarity in these parts. I’ve never seen another pair nor any of the offspring of this pair. The Hummingbird feeder and grapes are outside of my kitchen window, but the bird will not tolerate the camera and tripod outside nor in the kitchen. I had to set the gear up in a room adjoining the kitchen and use the zoom. You can see the female flash through the scene as she leaves the far side of the hummingbird feeder. If anyone has any experience with Orioles, I’d love to talk about them.
