How can I keep field mice from nesting in my blue bire boxes?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 6 Comments

I have six blue bird boxes at my home in Connecticut. Each winter the boxes are taken over by a families of field mice that I clean out each spring. When I clean them they are pretty disgusting and smell like urine. Since the mice have started adopting the bird houses for their winter homes, I have had very few blue birds or other birds choosing to use the boxes. Does the use by the mice keep the birds away? Any suggestion on how to keep the mice out? Should I prop the boxes open for the winter so they are less attractive to the mice? Thanks

Would this work?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

Thought about this a few days ago, I’ve seen bird houses for various birds, basically standard backyard song birds and even ones for owls….thought of building a bird house for feral pigeons… or at least some kind of shelter and seeing if a pair builds a nest on the balcony of the town house I live in.

There’s a few pigeons that live in my neighborhood and I have read about pigeons who have built nests on people’s balconies.

Think a wooden crate used for shipping/holding wine would be a good ‘nest box’ for a pair of pigeons, also is there anything I can/should do to make it….more, appealing?

The crates are 100% and don’t have any opening on the sides.

They’re a good size and are a bit deep. I think they’d be big enough

no jokes please

*CALLING ALL BIRD WATCHERS* Bird garden/ sanctuary plan?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 3 Comments

weeyell, question says most, but i’m thinking of not only plants that would attracts hummingbirds and songbirds but feeders (humming and song), bird houses, nesting material bag, trees, bird baths (fancy ones!), etc. It has to fit into like 8′ by 8′ and money’s not really a concern (I mean, it can’t go crazy lyk ,000 or something but u kno what I mean)

BTW: I live in the suburbs of San Diego, CA if that changes anything…

Wild Bird Question;Bird Houses!?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

So,I was wondering:

1.Do wild birds really use bird houses that are on a low branch in a tree?

2.What color do birds like in a red maple tree?

3.Should I put anything in the bird house, like straw or something?

All comments appreciated!
