Can the management company of the building I live in say what we can or can't have in our patio?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

I live in an apartment building with my family. Recently, my parents (and every other resident in the building) received a letter stating that if we did not remove items like brooms or towels from our patio’s we would be fined 0. Though I think the fine’s outrageous, I can see why they wouldn’t want stuff like that uglyifying the building but they’re not allowing birdhouses or plants or bikes either! We own our apartment, are they allowed to do this?
We’re not renting it. We own our unit.

How To Keep Those Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds Safe From Harm At The Feeder

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

The color red is notorious for attracting hummingbirds and a glass hummingbird feeder will be no exception. It delivers a whimsical artsy charm to your garden, two or more of these hummingbird feeders will lend credence to the saying “more is better.” I wrote about ways to attract hummers to your glass hummingbird feeders, so I think it is only right to warn you about at least one of the hummingbirds that you might attract in your area.

That would be the Ruby-throated hummingbirds. If you have lured the Ruby-throated to your garden and glass hummingbird feeders you will soon find out that this little hummer is very territorial. They will defend the flowers and hummingbird feeders within their favorite roost spot very vigorously. If you wish to attract more than one hummer you may want to try putting up 2 or 3 more glass hummingbird feeders out of sight from each other. I suppose “out of sight out of mind” would work here. If the Ruby-throated hummingbird can’t see your other glass hummingbird feeders then they won’t be trying to bully the other hummers off.

Now a little about your hummingbird feeders needs. You will need to change the hummingbird nectar and clean your glass hummingbird feeder every 3 to 4 days and more often in hotter weather. If you see black spots inside your feeder it is mold, a good bottle brush or some sand in warm water will get rid of it. You should never use a harsh detergent to clean your glass hummingbird feeders. A good rinsing with hot water every time you change the nectar, if done on a regular basis, will eliminate any problems with mold. You may want to try only filling your hummingbird feeders half way so you don’t have as much waste. The little hummers can only drink so much hummingbird nectar in 3 or 4 days.

Here are a few pointers about the other half of the Bed & Breakfast for the birds in your garden. A wood birdhouse will marry well with your collection of garden decor birdhouses. Painted bird houses come in all shapes and styles. The size and shape of your wood birdhouses should be determined by the type of species you wish to attract.

Whatever type of wood birdhouse you wish to buy, here are a few general guidelines that will help keep your birds safe and your unique birdhouses in good shape. With few exceptions, bird houses should be made from wood. With wood birdhouses placement is much easier, a metal house must be hung in a shady area where it won’t absorb the heat from the sun. If your decorative birdhouses don’t have any holes drilled into the bottoms of them, drill some, this will keep rainwater from collecting inside. You should clean your wood birdhouses once a year to remove old nest materials making them ready for next year’s guests.

These simple guidelines will help you find the perfect decorative birdhouses for you and your garden’s visitors. Remember the birds’ comfort and safety should be number one and letting it show in your garden decor birdhouses lets everyone know it is number one to you.

Okay so here’s the question, and answer choices. Can you tell me how you got the answer? Thanks.

"Jasmine is building birdhouses. It takes her 3.5 hours to build 4 birdhouses. Which of the following is an equivalent rate?"

A) 14 hours to build 18 birdhouses
B) 28 hours to build 35 birdhouses
C) 21 hours to build 28 birdhouses

Thanks a bunch. (:

Do you think people are destined for certain roles?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 12 Comments

Let’s say there are archetypes of humanity: the artist (craftsman, or builder), the visionary (inventor, adventurer), the warrior (or hunter), the leader, the nurturer and the healer. They crave to create, to discover, to conquer/defend, power, to care for life, and to preserve life, respectively. They feel "right" when they do these things. They’re usually crossed (artist/visionary, warrior/leader, visionary/leader, healer/nurturer, etc.) My question to you is, do you think that all people, regardless of sex or race, are born to fill these niches or niche combinations? (Example: An artist/nurturer would be happy creating something like birdhouses, but an artist/visionary must make something shocking and new.) And that people become unhappy when forced into archetypes they aren’t suited for (Example: a warrior/leader building houses) or, are our preferences developed conciously (we decide to like ___, so we do?) Also, if you agree with the system, which niche combo are you?
Interesting answers so far, but I don’t think a person’s success must factor in to their desires because like someone said, success is half chance (it’s half skill as well, so if you don’t have the opportunity to develop in your supposed niche, you will suck even at your heart’s desire). Let’s say that untapped warrior I mentioned builds a decent house just because they’ve been doing it for years, but they still don’t like building. They’d rather be arguing at a debate, or learning to fight even though they’d be better at building than fighting at first. Surely some of you know the feeling of wishing you were anywhere but your job because you hate the work. You only stay with it because it’s all you know or you need the money. Otherwise, you’d be gone so fast there’d be skid marks on the floor to mark the occassion.
JOHN- I think I mispoke. I didn’t mean "destiny" exactly, only a strong pull towards a social role. Just because you fit a role doesn’t mean you’ll get it, only that the role you’re hardwired to fill is the only role that fulfills you. The forces at work in making slaves is that one group is stronger and looking for slaves. White people had guns, Africans didn’t. Egyptians were settled and had standing armies and the Hebrews were not as cohesive. They made their slaves farm and build but there were definitely leaders, warriors, artists, etc. in there. They just lived a life denied their nature. It’s possible, but it’s not pleasant.

Birdhouses – Good for the Family & Great for the Birds

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

Adding a birdhouse to your back yard is a great way to build family togetherness, as well as help the decline in habitats that our feathered friends are facing. When placing birdhouses in your yard you are encouraging birds to frequent your yard. By providing shelter from the weather and from predators you are strengthening the bird population for future generations to enjoy. Birdhouses also create entertainment for you and family! By watching the male and female build their nest and raise their young they are learning about the family unit comparable to your own. It is a great way to teach the children about nature.

When you decide you want to add a birdhouse to your yard, ask yourself the following questions. This will help to enhance your bird watching activities for you and your family.

What type of bird are you trying to attract?

There are about 85 species of birds in North America that are classified as cavity dwellers. About 30 of these species will use a birdhouse, such as bluebirds, titmouse, some owls, and some woodpeckers to name a few.

Do you know what type of birdhouse they would prefer?

Check out the Audubon Society or your local library for books that describe the birds habitat and type of nest they prefer.

Do you have a plan on where to place the birdhouse?

First of all, be sure it is away from your bird feeders. For example, it is a good idea to space bluebird houses at least 200 feet apart because they are very territorial and do not like other birds hanging around. Next, be sure the entrance hole is facing away from the direction of your normal wind flow and rain. (I know at my house the wind and rain are almost always blowing out of the southwest)

Is the house easy to clean out after the birds start their journey south?

Look for a birdhouse that has an access door or opening. Once a year, you can use a very mild solution of bleach and water to clean your birdhouse.

What threats will the birds face if they build in your backyard?

I know that I must have all the squirrels in the US in my neck of the woods and they love to eat wood!! You can buy a birdhouse with a squirrel guard around the entrance hole or you can easily add one of your own. Also, even though most birdhouses come with a perch at the entrance hole, they are not a good idea. Birds can sit, enter, and fly away from the entrance hole if you have the proper diameter entrance hole. A perch allows predator birds to sit and peck away at the eggs inside the nest.

What size birdhouse do you want or need?

Some birds prefer their own nest and will not nest close to their neighbors. Others, such as Martins, prefer a gaggle of neighbors that is why their houses come in condo type birdhouses. Again, if you check out the type of birds you would like to attract, you should find this information.

How long will it take for me to have birds building nest in my birdhouses?

Do not give up! If you put out a birdhouse, they will come. It just takes time.

How to Attract More Birds to Your Backyard and Birdhouses

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

If you have already put up some birdhouses in your own backyard, you are probably wondering how you are going to attract and get more birds to come and visit your birdhouses. This article provides some ideas that you can easily implement to attract more birds to your backyard and your birdhouses.

First, as with humans, food is always a popular way to attract birds to your birdhouses and your backyard. You can provide different kinds of food to cater to different types of species of birds. Some of these food include nectars, small insects, fruits, nuts and seeds. In addition to these food sources, you should also always provide fresh water to the visiting birds. Bird baths and small ponds are some good ways to provide the visiting birds with water.

The fastest way to a bird’s heart is through its stomach. By providing food and water to the birds, you are performing bird feeding. Bird feeding is also a great way to observe different species of birds and their respective unique characteristics. Bird feeding is particularly important to birds because it provides them with a source of food and water during periods when food and water are scarce such as winter time. However, bird feeding can be done all year round as it supplements the visiting birds with their food needs. As such, its a great way to attract more birds to your birdhouses and backyard.

So how can you use this knowledge to attract more birds to your birdhouses and backyard ? For one, you can choose a safer spot in your backyard and set up a simple feeding station. The spot you choose should preferably be away from predators. You can take some precautionary measures to make the chosen spot safer like installing a ultrasonic cat deterrent and making sure there are no food near the spot so as to avoid attracting hungry animals. You can encourage birds to visit your feeding station by placing bird food in different areas around the feeding station. You can then vary the distance and shorten it as time goes by.

As mentioned, you don’t have to build or buy an elaborated feeding station. The most important factor that your feeding station should have is the ease in which you can maintain it. It should be easy to refill, it should display the food prominently to birds, it should also hold a reasonable amount of food so you do not have to keep topping it up with food and finally it should be able to hold more then one bird at one time. Some of the simple feeding station you can consider buying would be the tube-feeder in which the seeds stay dry and its design prevents spillage of food or you can choose the hopper type of bird feeders which dispenses food automatically when they are needed.

As for water, it is essential if you want to attract more birds to your birdhouses. You should note that different species of birds have different requirements of how deep they like their water source to be. For example, some species of birds like small puddles while other birds like bird baths that are relatively deep. Providing various depths of water will attract different species of birds. However, do take note that your water depth should not be more then 2 inches deep as some birds may drown and do not choose a bird bath with an elaborated and striking pattern or design at the bottom of the bath as it may confuse the birds and discourage them from using the bird bath.

Besides all the points mentioned above, you should also keep in mind the number one factor that influences the attractiveness of your birdhouse to visiting birds. What’s the number one factor that people always don’t take note ? Its the safety of your birdhouses to the visiting birds. If you are attracting a certain kind of species of bird, customize the entrance opening hole of the birdhouse to suit just the species of bird you want to attract. Removable of birdhouse perches and the reduction of backyard predators also play a big part in making your birdhouse safer and more attractive to birds.
