Male Rufous Hummingbird in Nanaimo

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

This Rufous Hummingbird recently arrived in my little sanctuary, Although I did edit down the time a little, the entire raw footage clip was less than three minutes, as he shares the feeder with a young Anna. The male (brown body, ruby throat) is a lucky find for me as I rarely see them, let alone catch one on video.

© DeadlyTeaParty Property Please join my nature page: www.facebook.com You’ll never guess what I came across today?? I CAME ACROSS A GOLDFINCH’S NEST; EVEN BETTER THE ACTUAL PAIR WERE MAKING IT!! I love these little birds; they are so bright and colourful; to be truthful I find it real had to get great videos of them!! Latin name Carduelis carduelis Family Finches (Fringillidae) Overview A highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch. Sociable, often breeding in loose colonies, they have a delightful liquid twittering song and call. Their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds from thistles and teasels. Increasingly they are visiting birdtables and feeders. In winter many UK goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain. Where to see them Anywhere there are scattered bushes and trees, rough ground with thistles and other seeding plants. Likes orchards, parks, gardens, heathland and commons. Less common in upland areas and most numerous in southern England. When to see them All year round. What they eat Seeds and insects in summer.

Silver-eyes on Suet Bird Feeder

Silver-eyes otherwise known as wax-eyes or white-eyes are native to New Zealand, Australia and other islands in the south pacific. They like to feed on citrus, feijoas, figs, grapes, pears and persimmons. Here they are finishing off a suet block made from wild bird seed and dripping. These suet feeders are a great way to attract small birds to your garden. They can hold 2 slices of bread or a suet block.

Bird Feeding in Michigan. Imagine a wood-free feeder that actually looks like wood! Our EcoTough™ Classic won’t crack, fade or rot and has a lifetime guarantee. The Classic has curved ends so you can see birds feeding on both sides at the same time. Perch drains allow seed to drop out of the feeder for ground-feeding birds to eat, and angled perches let empty seed hulls be blown away by the wind. EcoTough feeders and houses are environmentally friendly, high quality products that are made from recycled plastic milk jugs. These feeders and houses prevent used milk jugs from making their way into our landfills.

Scout How-To: Plastic jug/bottle birdfeeder

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

This is a fairly easy project for making a birdfeeder from a plastic milk jug or juice bottle. This can be used toward Tiger elective 32, Wolf achievement 5e, Wolf elective 13, Bear achievement 5b, or the Webelos Craftsman activity pin (which could also be helpful for completing the Naturalist activity pin). To make this, you will need a plastic milk jug or juice bottle, a drill, a utility knife (or a hobby knife or good scissors), a hot glue gun, a 5/8″ dowel (approximately 12″ long, depending on the size of the jug or bottle), and waterproof rope. Optionally, you will need permanent markers or waterproof paints to decorate the birdfeeder once you are done. Please check out my blog at scouterjon.blogspot.com for more Scouting tips.
