Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

The American Goldfinch feeding at my seed ball that is filled with black oil sunflower seeds. The Bright colors and the song or these Wild Canaries Are Like no other bird that comes to my feeders they add color and music to the yard. They are probably one of the easiest bird to attract to the yard just make sure that you offer plenty of clean fresh seed and a water source and you will have no problem keeping them around.

Chickadee eggs haven't hatched, mom still sitting?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

Outside we have a little bird house (originally for decoration) but about a month ago a momma chickadee decided to build her nest in there. She’s very good about letting us peek in through the hole, never gets up and flies away (we don’t tamper with anything, just peek)

So once when she was out getting food we look inside and see 4 little eggs sitting there! This was about three weeks ago, and I read online that it takes about two weeks for the eggs to hatch. Momma’s still on the unhatched clutch. Will chickadees sit on a bad clutch or can the eggs hatch unusually late? Will she stop sitting on them after a certain amount of time?

Is malathion toxic to wild birds?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

Our asparagus, for the 2nd year in a row, is being eaten by beetles. I’m not sure which beetle it is. We have bluebird houses, chickadee houses and volunteer birds’ nests on our 3/4 acre lot. Will malathion, if sprayed on the asparagus, kill the beetles without harming the wild birds who might eat them and also will probably even feed some of the beetles to their babies?

    A question about nesting?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

I had 2 birds competing for one nestbox in my yard. First, the tufted titmice were there. Then, about 3 days ago, I saw some annoying house wrens going into the box. I tried everything (including wren guards) to keep them out, but they still found a way to get in there. So, after noticing for 3 days that the house wrens were going in there and fearing that my chickadee’s nest would be there next target, I decided to place a trap over the entrance hole to move the birds far away from my yard ( I know I can’t kill them). But today I caught a tufted titmouse?

What’s going on? Are both species using the same nestbox? The only species that I’ve seen going in and out of the box are the house wrens.

What type of seed to feed wild birds?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 3 Comments

In my front yard I have a tube feeder and a suet feeder. The types of birds that i usually see around the feeders are Cardinals, Carolina Chickadee, Downy Woodpecker. I also have seen small brown birds but im not really sure what they are. The cardinals mainly picks up scraps off the ground. I have a male and female that come around. The Chickadee mainly eats out of the tube feeder but I seen it eating out of the suet feeder and sometimes eating the seed on the ground. The male and female woodpecker mainly eat out of the suet feeder but i’ve seen them on the tube feeder too. I don’t have squirrels. Raccoons and possum have been seen around my house too. So, anything that wont attract them would be nice. And I would like to know of the best kind of suet that would be good for all of the birds and the best type of seed. Right now I have a high energy blend of suet that is in the suet feeder and the type of seed i have just says wild bird seed but the ingredients are Milo,
White Prosso Millet and Sunflower seed. I would also like to know if a bird bath would be good I seed some the you can hang from a tree. Would these type of birds use something like that.

What Birds are feeding in my feeder?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 3 Comments

I live in Western Massachusetts (USA) and for a school project I needed to study a type of bird and watch its habits. I set out a bright blue plastic bowl and filled it with bird seed and some came. I cannot figure out what type it is because I am by no means a bird expert. It is a CHUBBY, SMALL bird with a LIGHT BREAST and a DARK BACK & HEAD and eats mostly the sunflower seeds in my bird seeds and leaves the others.I’ve seen a group of 14 at a time, and i looked in some books and I think it is an English/house sparrow. I asked some others and the other bird guesses were white breasted nuthatch, or some type of chickadee.Any information would be a help. :)

    wild bird eggs?? help!?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 3 Comments

There has been a nest repeatedly used on the side of our house for several years now, im not sure if its the same set of birds each time or not. Currently, it looks to be a black/white chickadee (or something really simliar). We live in upstate NY and my brother checked out the nest while the mother was gone, there are TEN eggs!! 5 all white, 5 white w/brown speckles all over them (all same size). Any ideas? Ive been aware of a species that lays their own eggs in other birds nests, once hatching, the intruding much larger baby birds kick out the original babies, and the mother just continues feeding them as if they were her own. Will 10 babies survive? If not, we are willing to take some out and try to hatch/raise them on our own (we know how it all works), but if 10 will survive with the mother, we would much rather let them be. thanks.
parasite bird would be Brown-headed Cowbird (i think)
okay, i would call someone to come take the eggs if i knew who to call…? what will happen to the eggs once taken? are they hatched/released or destroyed?
it may be illegal but i interfere with nature on a pretty constant basis honestly. if i see an injured/sick animal i think i can help ill give it a try. like if one gets hit by a car, i stop and take it to a rehabilitator. Last winter, i stopped after someone killed a possum and there were over 10 babies still alive inside, so i put them in my car and took them to be hand raised. I dont mettle where i dont need to. If i knew the eggs would hatch & survive, id be much happier leaving them but if one species is going to die either way, i might as well try to save them or find someone else who can.
