I never thought that I would ever see a woodpecker come to my bird feeder .I have seen them in the neighborhood before but was shocked to see him land and feed from the feeder. He or she has been back a couple of times since this video but is very skittish,as soon as he sees any movement in the house or hears a noise inside he takes off.We also have Cardinals,Titmice,Sparrows,Nuthatches,Chickadees,Pine Warblers and Gold Finches as regular guests. Not to mention A couple of Hummingbirds that like to spy on me through the window .

How do i attract wild birds to my yard?

What kind of feeder and seed should i use? I’m building a birdhouse next week to place out there too. In my yard right so far ive seen robins, mourning doves, chickadees and crows, etc with blue jays and cardinals during the winter. i also have goldfinches and hummingbirds during the summer but i’m going to wait to get them feeders because its starting to get cold and im sure they’ve already began to migrate south.

Why won't birds use the new feeder?

I used to have the Squirrel Buster Mini (can be seen at http://www.amazon.com/Brome-1055-Squirrel-Buster-Mini/dp/B001FK81PU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316525048&sr=8-1). But I changed to a new feeder (link below). Birds still use it, but nowhere near as much as my old feeder. I traded in my Squirrel Buster Mini for this new feeder. Is it that birds prefer to face forward when eating? I was thinking of attaching tubing horizontally by the feeding ports so they can do that. Any input on what I can do or what may be going on would be great. I get house finches, chickadees, and american gold finches.

Edit: I had this new feeder for three days now.
Edit: Thanks for the answer!
-I use the same mix, but may change to pure sunflower hearts to entice them more
-Maybe it does take some time for it to get around word of beak that this feeder is available :)
-if things don’t work out, I’m tempted to go back to the old feeder :( ….but this one is so nice looking though!

Getting birds to live in birdhouses?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

If I want to install a birdhouse with the hope of a bird living in it, is it too late for this year? (ie, have they already found locations and built their nests?) If it’s too late, when should I have it up by for next year? A bird keeps taking strands from my hanging flower basket, so I guess I figure I’ve already missed out for this year…

Also, if I put out dryer lint or horse hair (my horse is shedding) in my yard for them, would they use stuff like that for a nest?

I’m in southern Ohio, so it would be birds like chickadees, sparrows, etc.

no birds Are they out nesting with babies?

What kind of birds are these?

I am currently residing in north-central Texas, and I enjoy a little bird-watching show out of my balcony. I can’t really identify their species, though. I thought originally that perhaps these tiny finch-like birds were chickadees or house sparrows, but they don’t quite look like either. The males have have black-capped heads, bronze-brown and scalloped backs, with grey bellies and a white strip on their wing, and relatively long thin tail. The females are brown speckled and also have a grey belly, although somewhat lighter. Their call is a very high-pitched, short, *chirp*, which my parakeets imitate quite well. Do you know this species?
I did think they were house sparrows, but house sparrows have grey heads and these have black. Perhaps another species of sparrow?

after 30 years our bird house on a pole fell apart..we were embarrassed as we were being labeled ‘slum lords’..the bird house was in bad shape and leaked. our local senior center wood working shop built us a beautiful 2 floor birdhouse..but no little door to remove the nest like the other one..my auntie said it is not necessary to remove the nests..the birds will do it! is this true? don’t birds reuse nests? i want to place a birdbath near the pole this year..do most birds use these baths.? also…i was thinking of having a pole placed near our deck with another birdhouse..will our activity upset the birds..i think they are wrens or chickadees!

how do i get birds to eat out of my hand?

I have been putting out bird food in my back yard for almost a year now, I have recently started using my own bird calling. When I sing the song they start chirping and they fly to the next bush closest to my house, sometimes they fly away though, why? But now that they know my bird calling i want to start feeding them by hand, I am pretty sure they are some sort of chickadee. I have a few pigeons, it annoys me but i mean they want food as well, so I let them, the pigeons arent afraid to come close to me but the chickadees are, if I stay still then their ok, but if i do something, even if its blink, they fly away.

When to remove bird nests from bird houses?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

I know you are supposed to remove the nests from bird houses yearly but I am not sure what time of the year I am supposed to do this. We have two bird houses- one where some wrens come every year and the other chickadees usually build a nest in but don’t usually stay. I just want to know what month to remove the nests and if I really need to remove them at all.

how far apart should chickadee birdhouses be?
