New birdhouses, when will the birds move in?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

I just recently built 3 bird houses and painted them key west style, they are very ornate, colorful, and fairly large. We have an acre in the backyard so I was wondering if hanging these will attract more birds, and if so, when will they move in? We are anxious to find out and hoping they don’t just look for a place to nest when they are ready to have eggs. Any input is welcome. Thanks!
it is a 2 inch hole (maybe 2 and a quarter) the houses are approximately 8×6 inches inside and approximately 8 inches tall, we live in north florida, just about 10 miles south of georgia and about 40 minutes north of jacksonville… we still get seasons here but maybe more birds when it gets colder up north? originally from long island, ny, last week will be our one year anniversary living here – - still trying to understand the local animals, lots of gopher turtles, lizards of all breeds, crocs, and birds (and people! ha ha)

    Hummingbirds?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

I live in Indiana and in the summer ( or maybe spring) , some hummingbirds come to the feeder. I read an article in this magazine called " Birds & Blooms) and it said about these hummingbirds building nests in strange places, like ropes and windchimes. In the summer or spring , if I place a tiny little bird house ( because they check out anything my mom puts out there) will they lay eggs in it if they are interested in the birdhouse? Or it is not their egg-laying season yet in the summer, in Indiana?

There are wasps in my birdhouse that need removal!?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

In the winter we went to a garage sale where i bought a small, plain little cardinal birdhouse for a quarter. I painted it with small roses and the door hole with a green rim, sealed the outside, and when spring arrived, I hung it in the tree in our backyard. We have a pair of cardinals in our tree, but not the birdhouse, they sit on the feeder and sometimes the little stopper for them to stand on in front of the house, but they never went inside. Just yesterday, I got really frustrated and went out to look at the house because I wanted to know why the beautiful red birds are so repulsed. Inside, i found a wasp nest, and a fat queen laying eggs inside. I have a terrible fear of flying stingers, and taking the birdhouse apart is not an option. How can I take them out, kill them, and keep them out for good without taking the birdhouse apart and repulsing birds?
    I’m looking for serious answers.

6-year-old Logan & his dove “Spot”

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

Logan, a 6-year-old boy, lives with his Dad and Mom in Urbandale, Iowa. Recently, Logan and his Mom were playing basketball in their front driveway when they saw a mother dove trying to make a nest above a light fixture on their house. After a while, though, the wind picked up and blew the nest apart. To encourage the mother dove to keep trying to build a nest in their yard, Logan and his Mom went to their back yard where Dad had recently put out the bird feeders. The mother dove followed. After a little while, the mother dove decided to build her nest in one of Dad’s bird feeders! A few days later, Spot (as Logan had now named her) laid her eggs! She now sits waiting for them to hatch, under the close eye of Logan. Dad and Mom consider Logan the doves’ protector and a hero!

So, In my Garage my dad found a box with a little bird nest in it. With some white down feathers, twigs, and some trash. The diameter of the HOLE of the Nest was, eh, about 8cm. The nest itself, about Diameter 14cm. And in a different box nearby there were 3 little eggs. They are whiteish Pink, with reddish brown speckles on it. They have a length of 1.4cm. and with of 1.1cm. Tiny. I researched a bit and found out it was probably a House Wren, who’s eggs and Nest it was. I live in The north west. And I’m pretty sure the nest and Eggs are abandoned. There was a cat who lived in the garage, and Who knows what happened.
So I was wondering, We have an incubator, and If anyone knew what the humidity should be, temperature, and how long to incubate them for! Or I we should even try to hatch them at all.
Oh and what the babies eat? And information you would need to know to raise these birds until they’re good enough to go in the open. We raised Turkeys before(: Thanks so much If you have any helpful information!

    Scared bird away from nest!!?

Posted by admin Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 8 Comments

Awhile ago some house wrens made a nest on my balcony but they had been MIA for over a week so I thought they had abanded the nest. Today I went to get something out of my storage closet and the mom was in the nest!! It scared the crap out of me when it flew out and when I looked in the nest their were four little eggs! I ran back inside and even threw some bread crumbs by the nest in hopes of getting her to come back. It just happened but I’m so worried she won’t come back! How long will it take her to come back? Will she come back? I feel so bad. Someone please tell me I didn’t just kill four baby birds.
Thank you SO much for all your answers!! haha now I realize I kinda freaked but this is my first time watching the whole nesting process and I was worried I’d just ruined it. I’m not sure if the mom is back yet b/c I can’t see into the nest but I’ve shut all the blinds near my balcony and I’m definitely not going out there again so hopefully she figures out soon that it’s safe for her to come back. Also, don’t worry about me handling the birds in any way. Even if they didn’t come back I wouldn’t have touched the eggs. I really want to see these birdies hatch but at the same time ya gotta let nature take its course. Again, thank you so much for all your help and I’m sure I’ll be back freaking out about something else. haha bye!
haha ok, I’m back w/ a question sooner than I thought I’d be. I realize now that it was kinda dumb to throw the bread by the nest b/c it could attract other birds but I don’t want to scare off the mom again by going out there to clean them up. Last time she didn’t fly away until I was right in front of the nest and most of the crumbs are behind it so I can get to them without her seeing me but she’ll definitely be able to hear me. Should I risk scaring her again to clean up some of the bread or just leave it be?
