Building a finch bird house?

Will finches use a birdhouse built similar to a purple martin "condo" (a large house with dividers in it and individual entrances for each area), or will they only use single dwelling houses?

Zebra Finches Like To Build Nests

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

In this video my two Zebra Finches are building a nest inside their basket/nestbox . Its good to use as is, but they like to improve it with dry grass. It can be any grass from the outside. You can just pull it out of the ground and throw it into the cage. There is already one egg laid inside the nest. You can see my parakeet sits on the side of the cage on the left side. For some reason he really likes these birds and wants to spend time with them. I dont let him go inside though.

Life under the bird feeder

I set my camera out under a hanging bird feeder……. The result is 3 squirrels, some starlings, grackles, sparrows, finches, a mourning dove, a blue jay, and one sneaky neighborhood cat! Lots of bird noises…some ambient music….and some auto-focus noises too…enjoy.

Indoor Finch Aviary

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 25 Comments

I’ve always been attracted to aviaries since I was a kid and I’ve finally been able to make one. It makes a great addition to our home as it is very relaxing to just sit from a distance and watch these little birds fly about. Currently, we have societies, orange cheek waxbills, shafttails, and an indian silverbill who all get along fine. I wanted to put a waterfall in there but cleaning it would be a pain since the birds love to bathe in their water. I designed this so I wouldn’t have to disturb the birds too often so I use either aspen, cedar, or pine shavings on the floor. I leave a thick pile of it, rake it every other day and then clean it out completely every few months. The food in the wild bird feeder lasts for weeks so the only chores I have to do are to replace the water and give them their veggies, worms, etc.

Are there any grammatical errors in this paragraph?

One of the most tranquil places to be is my aunt and uncles backyard. The fragrance of newly bloomed pink Impatiens, blue Phlox and yellow Lady Bank Rose fills the evening air. A low hum comes from bees buzzing around the Wysteria Vine that shades the wooden swing below. Chipmunks scurry along the ground in search of a stray sunflower seed that has fallen from the bird feeder above. A bullfrog’s deep croak echos off the still pool of water that surrounds him. Yellow Finches that perch on trees nearby sing a melodious tune. At the corner of the porch is an antique barrel filled to the brim with rain water used for watering the garden. Birdhouses that hang from the tin roof of the porch gently sway in the warm summer breeze. The chirping of crickets bring warm feelings of home in the country. The bright green lizzard is well camouflaged as it rests on a fern. My aunt and uncle’s backyard is the perfect place to relax.

I have 2 bird feeders right next to each other hanging in a tree and all I am getting are?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

a family of house sparrows. I get a red cardinal that comes around occasionally, but he will only eat from the ground. I can’t understand why he won’t eat from the feeder. But, I am waiting for some really pretty birds to come and they won’t. What will make the pretty birds like the yellow finches come? I know there is a certain feeder for finches. Will they come to other feeders or does it have to be a special finch feeder?

Back yard bird feeding?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

I have a few bird feeders in my back yard and I love feeding the birds, but I have so many doves. Is there any seed they won’t eat? Also, will red-winged blackbirds eat safflower seed? Another thing, how do I get the blue jays to come to the feeders? I have a wide variety of birds-red-bellied woodpeckers, downys, cardinals, goldfinches, hairys, sparrows, house finches, crackles, rose-breasted grosbeaks, and of course doves, but I can’t get blue jays! Any help would be appreciated.

Ideas for catching a parakeet needed!?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 3 Comments

We feed the wild birds and now have an escaped parakeet coming in to the feeders. Need some ideas on how to capture the little dickens as it won’t be able to survive the winter outside here in N. Central PA, USA. He/she flies very well and is happily hanging out with the house finches.

Is there any food or treat that your ‘keet absolutely loves that might help lure the bird into a cage?

Right now I have a bird cage nearby but letting all the birds get accustomed to that. They know when something changes around the feeders and it takes them a day or so to settle back down. Planning on putting food in the cage as the next step and progressing from there. He/she will let you get about 6 to 8′ from it before flying off right now but netting would be next to impossible.

It is rather funny to hear a line of parakeet chatter in amongst the other birds songs and stranger still to see a yellow and bright green parakeet feeding at the feeders with the house finches.

Any suggestions? Wild birds I have a lot of general knowledge on but domesticated ones, not so much.
