The color red is notorious for attracting hummingbirds and a glass hummingbird feeder will be no exception. It delivers a whimsical artsy charm to your garden, two or more of these hummingbird feeders will lend credence to the saying “more is better.” I wrote about ways to attract hummers to your glass hummingbird feeders, so I think it is only right to warn you about at least one of the hummingbirds that you might attract in your area.
That would be the Ruby-throated hummingbirds. If you have lured the Ruby-throated to your garden and glass hummingbird feeders you will soon find out that this little hummer is very territorial. They will defend the flowers and hummingbird feeders within their favorite roost spot very vigorously. If you wish to attract more than one hummer you may want to try putting up 2 or 3 more glass hummingbird feeders out of sight from each other. I suppose “out of sight out of mind” would work here. If the Ruby-throated hummingbird can’t see your other glass hummingbird feeders then they won’t be trying to bully the other hummers off.
Now a little about your hummingbird feeders needs. You will need to change the hummingbird nectar and clean your glass hummingbird feeder every 3 to 4 days and more often in hotter weather. If you see black spots inside your feeder it is mold, a good bottle brush or some sand in warm water will get rid of it. You should never use a harsh detergent to clean your glass hummingbird feeders. A good rinsing with hot water every time you change the nectar, if done on a regular basis, will eliminate any problems with mold. You may want to try only filling your hummingbird feeders half way so you don’t have as much waste. The little hummers can only drink so much hummingbird nectar in 3 or 4 days.
Here are a few pointers about the other half of the Bed & Breakfast for the birds in your garden. A wood birdhouse will marry well with your collection of garden decor birdhouses. Painted bird houses come in all shapes and styles. The size and shape of your wood birdhouses should be determined by the type of species you wish to attract.
Whatever type of wood birdhouse you wish to buy, here are a few general guidelines that will help keep your birds safe and your unique birdhouses in good shape. With few exceptions, bird houses should be made from wood. With wood birdhouses placement is much easier, a metal house must be hung in a shady area where it won’t absorb the heat from the sun. If your decorative birdhouses don’t have any holes drilled into the bottoms of them, drill some, this will keep rainwater from collecting inside. You should clean your wood birdhouses once a year to remove old nest materials making them ready for next year’s guests.
These simple guidelines will help you find the perfect decorative birdhouses for you and your garden’s visitors. Remember the birds’ comfort and safety should be number one and letting it show in your garden decor birdhouses lets everyone know it is number one to you.

If you enjoy seeing living creatures in your backyard, hanging a few garden bird feeders around the area will surely have them flocking to your property. Bird feeders are like an invitation to a dinner party. Who would pass up the chance to eat without having to hunt and prepare their own food? In order for the feeders to bring more birds to your home, there are a few things that you should consider, including the location, height, style, and patience.
The first thing you want to think about when placing bird feeders in your yard is the placement. The best locations to feed wild birds are around trees and shrubs. This allows the birds to hide from predators while enjoying their meal. Most feeders that are out in the open will not attract a good number of birds. High traffic areas are also not a good idea, as birds tend to be shy animals and will not want to be bothered while eating their food. Placing feeders close to a bird bath is a good idea so they will have a nearby water source.
Height is another consideration to make regarding garden feeders. If you are using a pole to hang your bird feeder, one that is 5 to 6 feet tall is sufficient. If hanging the feeders from a tree, it is recommended not to go any higher than 6 to 7 feet. You do not want to make it too difficult for you to refill the bird feeders on a regular basis. When hanging the items, make sure you use a durable material so that squirrels or other animals cannot chew through it and knock the feeders down.
The style of bird feeder you choose will probably depend on the types of birds you have in your area. The typical bird house style may not be beneficial for all birds. Hummingbirds, for example, eat best from feeders that are designed specifically for them. You also need to think about what you will be feeding the birds when you purchase their feeders. Some feeders will only hold nuts, while others are larger and can hold bits of fruit.
As you can see, there are a few items to consider when purchasing and using garden bird feeders. Location is a very important aspect, as you will need to place the feeders where birds can get to them without being out in the open or around areas of high traffic. You will want to make sure you squirrel proof the feeder so they cannot knock it down or steal the food. Also, be sure to place them at a height that will be easy to reach when you need to refill the feeders. Bird feeders styles can widely vary, so think about the kinds of birds you will be feeding when making you purchase.

Bird feeders come in many shapes and designs. They can be anything from the usual wire tube bird feeders to fancy bird houses, but they all serve the same purpose – to provide wild birds with a constant food supply in your garden. It’s a harsh fact that many species of birds are struggling for survival in this present climate. Cold weather can be particularly threatening to birds with smaller bodies, such as robins and blue-tits, and not to mention the disastrous affects it can have on their natural food supply.
Every year a survey is held called ‘The Big Birdwatch Survey’. Last year 551,881 people voluntarily sat for an hour and counted the different species of wild birds they saw visiting their gardens. By doing this, it revealed that the number of Starlings visiting gardens has dropped 77% in the last 30 years, and the number of common House Sparrows has fallen 64%. By helping them with food and water during the winter months, not only are you doing your part for wildlife, but you are also attracting them into your garden.
Bird feeders are a great way for achieving this. Birds are shy creatures and won’t go to a place unless they feel safe. Where you place your bird feeder will determine the amount of birds that will visit. If you place it where there is a bush or a tree nearby, then the chances are high that you will get more visitors than you would if you placed it in the middle of the lawn or patio. Remember, it may still take them a few weeks before they feel safe and become regular visitors.
Bird stations are affective and ideal for gardens. The usual design of a bird station is a single pole with arms coming out nearer the top, allowing you to hang bird feeders. The amount of arms available varies from design to design, but the more arms there are, the more feeders you can have and the more food you can give. Some also come with food trays and water dishes. Bird stations also have an attractive appearance, so not only will you be providing your birds with everything they need in one place, you will also gain a nice feature in your garden. And, depending where you position it, it can also be a huge deterrent for squirrels who are famous for stealing the food you put out.
This is a sure way to attract more wildlife into your garden. The positioning of where you place their food can determine everything, but with a bird feed station providing all they need to survive in one safe place, you will be guaranteed to have many more birds visiting your garden time after time.
