Hummingbird Houses – The Joy Of This Bird House Feeder

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

One of the most curious, fascinating birds to be seen are hummingbirds, and for this, a bird house feeder specifically designed to their species is a perfect way to attract this rare, exceptional creature to one’s yard. Hummingbird houses attract these wonderous creatures for your viewing and listening pleasure.

Hummingbirds are the world’s smallest birds. For this reason, along with some of their habits and unique flying abilities, they have garnered much attention through the years. It is the dream of many bird watchers to have a small showing of these creatures on a regular basis. The best way to do this is to have some hummingbird houses on site.

Hummingbird houses, like their occupants, are small. They can be so small, in fact, that their houses are relatively hidden from view. This is fine for many people as it is the bird itself that they wish to view, and so such houses are sometimes placed at the inner part of a branch, close to the tree trunk.

Of course, one need not place the houses only on a tree as hummingbird houses also go well hanging from the overhangs and gutters of houses, along with off of shrubs, poles, and other such free-standing plants and structures that are tall enough to preclude an incursion by cats.

By their size, hummingbird houses can be made from almost anything that is much larger than an adult human’s hand. This includes small boxes, gourds, tin cans, and milk cartons. The basics of such homes are simply an enclosure with a small hole that will allow access for these tiny birds. On that note, the homes can be specific to this species by making the hole only large enough for hummingbirds (though some other small species might be able to also finagle their way in too, such as finches).

To add to the attractive nature of such a home, place the structure near to flowers that are frequented by hummingbirds. Further, by offering a feeder, hummingbirds will be predisposed to make a visit. A word of warning is offered about this, however. The drink that hummingbirds consume is not mere sugar water, and to offer sugar water only can be harmful to hummingbirds as they can acquire a fungus in their beaks that can be a mere nuisance or even deadly. To avoid this problem it is best to purchase hummingbird nectar.

Attract More Birds To Your Backyard With Feeders, Houses, and Baths

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

Wild birds are wonderful specie to follow and learn about. Bird watching is a growing hobby in the United States. It is fairly easy to attract these avian friends to your backyard using bird feeders, bird houses and bird baths. When all three components combined, it will not take long to have your own wild bird sanctuary in your backyard.

Selecting bird feeders for your backyard may be overwhelming for newbies. The truth is, selecting a feeder you want in your backyard can be as easy as one, two, and three. First, decide what kind of feathered friends you want to attract. Second, buy a bird feeder and bird food that will attract those birds. Most feeders will attract a variety of avian friends, however, there are certain bird feeders specially designed to attract a particular specie. For example, if you want to attract hummingbirds or orioles you’ll need to buy feeders that are designed to store hummingbird nectar or fruit, jellies or sweet nectar for orioles. The third part is the easiest and most enjoyable: find a place to put your bird feeder. You can hang bird feeders from tree branches or place them on top of the rail of your deck. Another popular way of displaying feeders for your feathered friends is on a hook stand or bracket. Hook stands can come as a single hook or others can hold as much as 4-8 bird feeders at one time. Wherever you place your bird feeders make sure you can see them and enjoy them.

There are two popular types of bird houses: functional and decorative. Functional bird houses may not be as pretty to look at but they are built for the sole purpose of housing birds. Decorative bird houses, on the other hand, are mostly built for decoration. These bird houses become popular collector items for gardeners and the like. Then you have your functional-decorative bird houses. You will get the most for your money with these types of bird houses. If you can find a house that is built to both house your avian friends and decorate your yard it’s a win/win for everybody involved. To keep bird houses safe from raccoons and cats, mount them atop metal poles. If you want to put a bird house in a tree, hang it from a branch. Make sure to keep houses away from any feeders. Mealtime can make nesting birds nervous and scare them off. Wherever you plan on putting your bird house try to face the entrance of the bird house away from any prevailing weather. You can also remove the perch if your bird house comes with one; they are unnecessary and house sparrows may sit on them to heckle birds inside.

Bird baths hold water to let wild birds bathe and drink from. You can find bird baths in all different shapes and sizes. Just like any bird feeder, in order to maintain and help your feathered friends build a residency in your backyard it’s important to keep the water in your bath clean. Switch out the water and wipe the bowl out at least once a week. This will not only help keep the water clean but will reduce the chance for mosquitoes to breed in the water. Bird baths are a fun and attractive garden feature for both avian guests and the gardener, however, it is hard to enjoy when you are swarmed with mosquitoes. Depending on where you live in the country mosquitoes are all over bird baths like bees on honey so keep these tips in mind when choosing a place for your bird bath.

Bird feeders, bird houses, and bird baths make wonderful lawn ornaments, provide a substantial living environment for your feathered guests and make gardeners happy. All three components are essential to any backyard in hopes to build a residency for avian friends year after year. Just think what you go home to every night. You have food, shelter and a place to clean up. That is what you are providing for wild birds using bird feeders, bird houses, and bird baths. These are very inviting features to any avian guest, therefore, hard to pass up. Join the bird watching community and incorporate bird feeders, bird houses and bird baths in your backyard today!

The Primary Reasons Chicken Houses Fail – Avoid These Major Mistakes

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with No Comments

If you’re thinking about building a chicken house, there are some important errors you need to be aware of so you can avoid them and ensure your house is a success. Typically these are the main errors that will cause your chickens to stop laying eggs, so preventing them in the building process will go a long way towards making sure you get fresh eggs daily.

Here are the primary reasons why chicken houses fail and what you can do to avoid them.

The Incorrect Size

Possibly the biggest reason why a chicken house fails is because it hasn’t been built to the right size specifications. If your chickens do not feel as though they have enough room in their chicken coop to move around, they will feel uncomfortable and overcrowded.

In order to avoid this, you should make sure each chicken has so much square feet of room. If they don’t, expect problems to occur.

You can easily avoid this by being sure the plan you use gives you instructions for size based on the number of birds you wish to keep.

Not Enough Light Coming Into The Chicken House

The next issue is not having enough light coming into the chicken house. Chickens need light in order to grow strong and healthy, and when you aren’t making use of natural windows and lighting, you’re going to wind up with unhealthy chickens that don’t lay eggs.

You also need to be sure you place these windows in the proper position on the walls of the coop since this too will make a difference in how optimally they allow the light to penetrate through.

Incorrect Chicken Feeder Position

Finally the third mistake that tends to go wrong when you’re building a chicken house is not placing the feeder in the correct position.

If your chickens are feeling strained to reach their food, they’re not going to eat as often as they should, which will also influence how many eggs they lay on a regular basis.

Ideally the feeder should be just slightly higher than their neck level so they don’t feel like they have to bend down to get at their food (which can also cause them to start scattering the food on the floor of the coop as well).

So be sure you’re keeping these points in mind as you go about building your chicken house. If you do things correctly you’ll have a chicken coop that continues to produce eggs for a long time in the future and that’s money well invested.

Here is more information on how you can build a chicken house on a budget.
