(4/25/2011) I make my own Hummingbird sugar water.(Nectar) It’s a very simple recipe. Also I put out oranges and grape jelly for the Orioles, Catbirds and Red-Bellied Woodpeckers. Homemade Hummingbird Nectar ~ Sugar Water! Enough for 2 Hummingbird feeders: 2 cups water Bring to a boil~ Take about 3 minutes in the microwave After the water comes to a boil add: ½ c Sugar Use a wire whisk and stir until dissolved I make mine in the morning Let it cool off Then fill the “Clean Feeders” To Clean the Feeders: I use Distilled White Vinegar Fill the Feeders with some Vinegar and Hot Water Use a bottle brush to clean the feeder Rinse well Do not add red food coloring to the water. Here is one minute of time spent standing by my in-law’s hummingbird feeder in Payson, Arizona. I am about one foot from the feeder. So far we have identified Broad-Tailed Hummingbirds, Broad-billed Hummingbirds, Black-Chinned Hummingbirds, and Rufous Hummingbirds.

I put this red and yellow hummingbird feeder out with my red colored walmart mix hummingbird nectar and I got 1 hummingbird. The feeder at that time was next to the house.
Then no activity at all. I read online that the nectar goes bad so I made my own clear 1 to 4 mix of sugar and water and moved the feeder to a tree away from the house. Still no birds. What can I do?
FUNNY UPDATE: I know some of you have said not to move the feeder but I went outside to move it back to near the house where I could see it. i figured that if the birds haven’t gotten here yet that that would be a better spot.
Well as I was about to take the last knot out of the string holding it up I heard a peculiar buzzing over my head. I see nothing and then down hovers next to me a bright red throat humming bird and he’s just looking at me. So I’ve still got my hands on it and he goes in and is drinking for maybe 30 seconds. Then I here another one and it is brown but it wants nothing to do with what the other bird did so it sits on a branch about 2 feet away. Soon after that i saw a green and red one.
I still can’t see the birds on the feeder from my house very well though.

This is 34 minutes of video edited down to 9 and a half minutes of Hummingbird Feeder action. There was a storm just to the north of the apartment and the wind tried the skill of God’s Little Helicopter’s as they had to do tricky maneuvers just to get dinner. Mostly there are hummingbirds here, but also a couple of appearances by a Hooded Oriole couple. Not much lightning in the background, but you might see some of you look closely enough.

It’s fun to watch the hummingbirds come to the window of our motor home.

So, I was minding my own business relaxing in the backyard when this hummingbird arrives. It was hovering back and forth around the bushes about 10 feet away from me. It was so beautiful and making these cool humming noises.

Suddenly it flew straight up into the sky above me about a hundred feet. My eyes were blinded by the sun but i could still make out the speck in the sky. Then it flew straight down 5 times as fast as it flew up. It plunged down scooping away from me at the last second and made an akward screeching noise.

Wow, that scared the hell out of me. Never saw it coming. I ran away into the house to tell my step-dad before it attacked me again. He said they are territorial. I’ve noticed humming birds that have seemed to get up close and personal before. So what’s the deal? Anyone have or heard of similar experiences? Do humming birds get agressive with humans?

I guess I’m gonna have to poison the bird feeder now…..
