Attracting wild birds to garden?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 7 Comments

Hi. Ive recently moved house and have a small yard, no grass out back. I have put up a bird table and a high line with bird feeders hanging off, along with fat balls, sunflower seeds etc, but the birds are just not coming. i know they are in the near area as a couple of doors down they have a few trees and I can see them in there, so why won’t they come over to my feeders?? Does anyone have any more ideas on what i can do to attract them over??

A few questions about a parakeet? Please read?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

Hi, I’m getting a parakeet soon. So far I just purchased the basics. I still need to go out and buy more toys and such, but I have a few questions on the things I purchased.

A very nice roomy cage.
It comes with a bird bath that attaches to the side that looks like a little house, 4 small feeding things, 2 wooden perches, a swing, and a treat dispenser.

I also bought a bag of Gormay Seeds. They have everything the bird needs, dry vegetables, and I think pellets. The lady at the store said that I don’t need to feed the bird extra fruits+veggies with this seed. I was thinking I could give him fresh fruits and veggies as a treat, or spray millet. Also, how much seed should I give my bird? 1/2 a cup? I’m not sure. Oh and once a day in the morning right?

Then I bought 1 toy. I obviously am going to need tons more, but the store had a very small selection so I’ll get the rest of accessoriess at Petsmart. For the perches here is my idea: He will have 1 wooden one, one rope one, one of those pedicurere things, and one that looks like sandpaper sort of. Is that good?
Lastly, I have a wooden play gym that I got at petsmart a few days ago. It looks like this, http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753061 except a little different. It only has one ladder, the swing is in a different spot, the rope with that toy thing is higher and opposite direction, and stuff like that. Oh and it also has 2 additional perches. Anyway, when I take my bird out, he can go on that. Though I’m not sure where I can put that play gym because my cage is round on the top, not flat. Well anyway, Thanks!

How do you attract birds to your backyard?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 3 Comments

We have a bird bath and hummingbird feeder at my house, and have recently put out a regular bird feeder with mixed seeds in it.

I have the bird feeder hanging in a tree but am not sure that the birds will feel safe from predators? It hangs at eye level and know that they won’t swarm to it within a few days, but am just wondering if anyone has an approximation of how long it will take before they start going to it regularly. What are some things I can do for the birds to notice the feeder sooner?

As for the bird bath, we don’t clean it very often and don’t get many birds in it for that reason. But I recently washed it out very well and replaced the water. About how long will it take for the birds to be accustomed to it and is there anything I can add to the bath to make it more appealing?

Thanks so much!

What cleaning product should be used to clean up bird droppings?

I have 25 finches in one large cage. I moved them recently to a different part of the house. And I noticed the wall that was behind the cage is now covered in bird droppings & stuck on seeds. What should I clean that with without thinning the paint behind it?
Thanks I will try the water soaked paper towel idea.

Do birds have teeth to eat their food?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 6 Comments

If they do, how do they eat seeds and hard stuff like nuts and fruit?
I was making a bird feeder for my house and I was wondering what kinds of foods I would put in. I was thinking about my hamster’s food, (seeds and almonds, corn, pieces of papaya, pinto beans) But then I thought "Do they have teeth?" So that’s why I asked this question.

Help finding the species of this bird?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

So our kitten has caught once again another birdy, but this time, i managed to get it away in time. This little bird is a little… actually quite shaken and wont open it’s eyes. Nothing seems to be broken and my kitten only pulled a few feathers. I think the bird will be fine. It’s not really moving much, it’s sorta just sitting in a small open box with some wood shavings for my hamster and it’s out in the barn on a high wooden beam so there isn’t much chance of another animal harming it. It can fly away any time it wants but it’s just sitting there.

I need help identifying this little birdy. I spent the past hour looking up the species but i cant find much.. It’s small, but not tiny, but it can fit in the palm of my hand…, it’s a dark gray color, more like black if you look at it from far, it has black eyes and black feet. I live in Hemmingford, in Quebec, if that helps.. i think I’ve seen others like this before so i don’t believe it’s a rare bird or anything. it hasn’t made any sound so i don’t quite know about that. We have a bird feeder out side the house so im sure it’s there every single day. My mum said it wont eat anything even if i give it any seeds or even bread..?
Do any of you have any idea’s as to what type of bird it might be?
Also, if there is anything I can do for this bird. Im letting you know now, im only 15 so im not about to jump in my parent’s car and drive who knows how far to find a vet that treats birds.. (I live on a farm an hour away from even a mall… imagine that!!)
So any tips or suggestions are welcome and thanks for your help!!!!
~Maddie
(PS, if any of you have a site where i can learn more about this bird., i’d appreciate it!)

Pet BlueJay, Have a couple Qs?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

I have a Pet Bluejay that I have had for a long time. He loves to eat fruits, mealworms, and seeds. He had his own cage that he sits o his perches and talks to me. I let him loose outside durring the day and he hops around and stuff. He only stays in the cage at night. He likes to play in the water. I wet the grass and he likes to cool down in it.

I AM RELEASING HIM WHEN HE GETS HIS FEATHERS IN AND IS ABLE TO FLY. BUT MAY GET LISCENS TO KEEP HIM BECAUSE HE IS SOO ATTCHED.
He could eat on own, he cracks open the seeds by himself.

I was wondering what else can he eat. Homemade treats for him. WHat are soime things around the house to intertain him. Or at stores.

He has a cage that is approx 16in(L)*13in(W)*24in(H). I found one that opens up at the top and you can put a perch on it. Its is pretty big its
19in(L)*14in(W)*32in(H).

1.) Toys that he can be intertained with? Around the house or at store?
2.) Treats he can have? Homemade or at stores?
3.) Should I get him the bigger cage?
4.) Anything else to add or able to give him or anything?

I ended up getting him from a kid who messed with the nest. I have taken care of other baby birds like robins and they were released in my back yard. They come say hi to me and get mealworms and stuff and then they are on there way.

He plays with his rings he has but One o them broke. I wanna try somthing diffeernt. He also has a mirror and he cracks me up and pecks at it thinking htere is another bird there.

Can You answer ALL my Qs PLEASE!
DONT say take him to rehaber, I know what im doing but wanna knw toys and stuff to keep him entertained at night or in the morning when im at school.

Bird feeders…………….?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

I want a wooden bird feeder that maybe the top comes off or rises so I can fill with seeds.I’ve tried a nearby craft store. They have ones that are basically decorative. I want an unfinished one so I can have my 2 yr old help me paint it. I tried The Home Depot & the lady said no. I know one can be built (didn’t really want to but I guess will if I have to).

I would like a simple one if it has to be built. Any good ideas how to go abt doing that or does anyone have any patterns to make one?

Thanks.

I want to make a cage for my thistle seed feeder, but I want the holes to only be big enough for goldfinches..?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

Ok, this is my situation. The reason I need a cage around the feeder, is so that the larger birds won’t hog all the seeds away from the goldfinches. I don’t mind that other small birds of that size can get in, I just wanna keep the house finches, sparrows, chickadees, etc. outta there. I know that the goldfinch is like 5 inches long, but none of the bird sites seem to report how tall they are upright (or how wide either). That’s why I don’t know how high or wide the holes in the cage should be. I live in an area where goldfinches inhabit year round, and I realize they would be brown right now, but if you can’t keep a supply of thistle seed, you’ll most likely never see them! So that’s where I am. If someone can give me exact numbers on the height & width of the holes in the cage I want to build, I will choose the first answer with those numbers as best, which will of course earn you 10 points.
