Cat Bird, Wren, Sparrow, BlueJay and closeups at feeder

The Blue Jay is frequenting the feeder now! Many baby birds learning to fly are there getting lessons from parents. I have some close ups of them. There is also a new visitor at feed station, a House Sparrow.

The same bird keeps returning INSIDE my house?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

For starters I HATE birds, or at least them banging into the walls and scaring the crap out of me!! But recently we’ve had the same sparrow fly into our house the past three days. The first day the Human Society caught it for me as we have tall ceilings and I couldn’t get it.l The next night he was chilling by my basement door, my hubby got that one. And the other night I woke up to a noise and there he was chilling at my window (on the inside) once again! How do I get rid of him? And where is it coming from. We have a fireplace? I actually duct tape it up with saran wrap (as my hubby laughed at me). My husband works out of town again Tuesday and I need to deal with the situation before hand because i’m not touching it!

When can I remove this bird nest?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

I live in San Diego. Under one of my eaves at my house there is a bird nest which I think is for a smaller bird like a Sparrow or something similar. It looks like some muddy compound that is tucked in to the corner. There is bird droppings on the floor and I can hear all the little chirping from inside the nest when I stand below.

I want to remove the nest but since It has been there since before I bought the house (10/09) I figure I can give them some more time to finish up this batch of babies and then I will take it out.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of bird makes this nest? If I hear the babies in there now chirping, how long do they typically stay in there before they are out on their own? Will the mother lay more eggs this year or will she let these guys go and then wait until next year for another batch (which means I can take it out as soon as she is done)?

In removing I figure I can scrape it off with a metal putty knife and then get the area wet with a hose a few times until it may be soft and then be able to scrub off the remainder so I am back to having my wood?

Ideas?

You are probably right about the kind of bird.

I am not a bird lover. I will remove the nest and I will prevent them from making another. I will however wait until they have left the nest, then take it down. I think I will get out my long extension ladder this weekend and look inside to see what we have… If they all fly out, then the nest goes as nothing is inside of it at that moment. I will NOT destroy the nest if there are eggs or babies in there that cannot fly. Beyond that, this is my house and they can go make a nest elsewhere.

Thanks

English Sparrow (pest) eradication from bird feeder

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 25 Comments

Good information on house sparrows. www.sialis.org “Without question the most deplorable event in the history of American ornithology was the introduction of the English Sparrow.” -WL Dawson, The Birds of Ohio, 1903 This video shows the removal (by hunting) of English (House) Sparrows from a feeder for the purpose of creating a friendlier environment for native song birds. This method equals instant death for the birds in question – much better than poisoning or netting. This was one of 4 trips I made to this location. By the end of the fourth trip, the English sparrow numbers were reduced significantly enough so that they no longer “swarmed” the feeder. Native song birds returned in healthy numbers. I estimated I shot around 200 in total (over the 4 days). I also tore sparrow nests out of the trees and barns. I hit ‘em like a ton of bricks. And the result was that there were song birds all over that bird feeder at the end of day 4. (the video was filmed on day 3). I moved around this location, shooting at 3 or 4 “hot spots”. This spot was just the easiest to film. Equipment details: Gun – Edgun Matador .22 PCP air rifle Scope – Hawke Sidewinder 30 6.5-20x (video at 10x) Pellets – JSB 18.1g shooting at 920 fps (34 ft/lbs energy) [It goes without saying that] All birds were legally shot, and all are exotic species. I can’t say this enough – if you have a problem with hunting do NOT watch this video. Friends can comment without approval. All others will be screened. For

Superstition about newborn baby and bird following him?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 1 Comment

I recently just had a baby boy and when we got to the house a small bird maybe a sparrow kept watching him through a window for hours. We later move him to a different room and the bird followed. Any superstition s or just weird?
Any myths or old wives tales?

What kind of birds are these?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 3 Comments

I am currently residing in north-central Texas, and I enjoy a little bird-watching show out of my balcony. I can’t really identify their species, though. I thought originally that perhaps these tiny finch-like birds were chickadees or house sparrows, but they don’t quite look like either. The males have have black-capped heads, bronze-brown and scalloped backs, with grey bellies and a white strip on their wing, and relatively long thin tail. The females are brown speckled and also have a grey belly, although somewhat lighter. Their call is a very high-pitched, short, *chirp*, which my parakeets imitate quite well. Do you know this species?
I did think they were house sparrows, but house sparrows have grey heads and these have black. Perhaps another species of sparrow?

How to get a bird out of my house that has flown into a small cluttered closet?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 8 Comments

So we have a sparrow in our house and the bird has flown into our foyer that is two stories with a large chandelier and a very large second floor window. The bird was flying into the large window repeatedly so i got on a ladder and covered the window and the bird flew right past an open door and under a door into a small cluttered closet next to the front door.
I mad a "tunnel with the side of a folding table and some blankets to the door, but i don’t think it has moved and i don’t know what to do? please help! Thanks!
