How does materials for building a house affect the environment?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 3 Comments

I’m working on a project for environmental studies. I have a few already but I need more. Thanks.

-Paint gives of bad fumes that affect the ozone layer.

-Wood- you need to cut down trees for it so you’re taking away nests for birds, squirrels, and whatever else. And trees omit oxygen.

-Air conditioner- There are chemicals that are suspected of causing damage to ozone layer.

-House lights and other appliances- increases carbon emissions that get into the atmosphere

Does anyone have some advice about my neighbor?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 9 Comments

I have lived in my house for 14 years, all that time I have had a bird feeder in the yard. The problem is that every time I or my husband are in the yard the birds, squirrels and chipmunk get excited thinking we are going to put food in the feeder. This is making my neighbor crazy, now they shout at us about feeding the animals. We don’t, they have also threaten my husband with an alligator. The man said he’d let one loose in our yard. We live in the Northeast by the way. I’m sure they are just drunk, but what can I do? I’m not comfortable in the yard now.

Taking Back the Birdfeeder

August 23, 2008: Both the deer and the squirrels have enjoyed the seed in my birdfeeders. The deer could easily eat the seed in the long cylindrical feeder, cleaning it out in one visit. They haven’t been successful with this new feeder. However, my lawn is filled with clover, so they have plenty to eat. When I took down the cylindrical feeder and replaced it with this round one that holds only sunflower seeds, the squirrels stayed away— for about one day. Now they’ve figured it out. The birds seemed suspicious at first, but as you can see, they have now accepted the new feeder. They make more visits than the squirrels, so I guess we can say they have reclaimed the feeder. Black-oil sunflower seed is the most popular choice of seed eating birds. This seed has a high percentage of meat and is a very nutritious source of high quality protein. The softer outer shell makes it easy for smaller birds like chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, goldfinches, pine siskins and finches. The seed also boasts a high concentration of oil, which is especially important in the winter.

Squirrel inside the bird feeder

Did not fasten the door to the bird feeder properly and this pesky squirrel got inside. Brought its friend with it as well. This video is a little blurred as I had to video through the window. I knew if I went outside the squirrel would run away. There is one squirrel in the bird feeder – the second squirrel surprised me. The previous video I made just showed a meshed ground feeder and a hanging feeder. I thought I was doing well bird feeding, how wrong can you be – the squirrel has been getting inside the feeder! The door to the meshed ground feeder is shut tightly now! Grey squirrels are taking over from the native red squirrels. I see that Prince Charles is wanting to see if there is anything we can do to help our native red squirrel. Hope he succeeds. Trisha. PS. Luckily yesterday I found out that if you cover bird food with chilli pepper powder squirrels will not eat the bird food BUT it does not affect the birds eating the food.

The Wild & Crazy Bird Feeder

What do you feel the weather will be this fall and winter……..?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 2 Comments

based on your observations? Most people will go by folklore of the Wooly Bear caterpillar others will go by how plants grow.
I feel it will be one of the coldest winters that North Carolina has seen since the blizzard of 77-78. In late August, the squirrels had already started stripping the trees of their nuts (mostly pecan and oak) and by the second week in September, it was done. They usually won’t start till late September mid October. Mice already trying to get in the house. Birds started flying south in mid August and have already seen the flurry of cardinals and black capped chickadees hanging around. They usually don’t do that till late October. Even the Canadian Geese have started their migrations to our area since the end of August, usually it’s late October early November.

What are your predictions for your area or the states in general. Let us know what state you live in as well.

Stay warm :)
Eye of Mars : LOL! I’m originally from Southern Indiana and I definitely can agree to that.
