Shows wild Baltimore Orioles (Icterus galbula,) singing, perching, and flying under natural conditions. Also shows the elaborate Oriole nest. Females and males are shown. The adult female is yellow brown on its upper portion with darker wings and a dull orange breast and belly. The adult male has orange plumage on its underparts, shoulder, and rump. The rest is black. The male’s song is a loud whistle. The Oriole likes to eat tree seeds and that is why they are often found in the tops of trees. They are very difficult to see, because they hide. The Baltimore Orioles is an American baseball team in Baltimore, Maryland, which was named after the bird. It is also the stat bird of Maryland.

I hung a suet feeder up over the summer and no birds seem to find it. Now that it’s winter I am trying again and this video is the first time I have seen the little birds at the feeder. These little birds always travel in groups and once one of them found the feeder it was only a matter of a minute before the feeder had ten birds on it. They all ate for about a minute and then were all gone. Birds may consume a quarter to a third of their body weight of food each day. You may be wondering what suet is . . . suet is animal fat. Suet cakes for birds are suet mixed with different combinations of things birds like to eat such as seeds, grains, nuts, fruits, or insects and provides a source of energy to wild birds. Inexpensive and durable wire cages that can be hung from branches, tree trunks, or hooks hold the suet for clinging birds—that is, birds that use their feet to cling onto objects such as the trunk of a tree. Not all birds can cling to a hanging object. One common clinging bird is the woodpecker. Jays are a type of bird that does not cling. The best price I have found the suet feeder shown here and the Suet cakes are at Wal-Mart for about .25 each.

Bluebird house, april 17th 2008. For the last 3 years, tree swallows have built a nest in this bluebird house,(my husband built this one) bluebirds used to nest in square shaped birdhouse next to this one. But this year it’s other way around, bluebirds are staying in this birdhouse and tree swallows in one of the two new bluebird houses I built in April.

Goldfinches feed on thistle seed in feeder tube while house finches enjoy the bounty of wild bird feeder. Squirrel enjoys seeds dropped below feeders. New, smaller water tray replaces larger tray shown previously. This arrangement helps to keep squirrels from jumping into bird feeders because of spacing.
