after 30 years our bird house on a pole fell apart..we were embarrassed as we were being labeled ‘slum lords’..the bird house was in bad shape and leaked. our local senior center wood working shop built us a beautiful 2 floor birdhouse..but no little door to remove the nest like the other one..my auntie said it is not necessary to remove the nests..the birds will do it! is this true? don’t birds reuse nests? i want to place a birdbath near the pole this year..do most birds use these baths.? also…i was thinking of having a pole placed near our deck with another birdhouse..will our activity upset the birds..i think they are wrens or chickadees!

When to remove bird nests from bird houses?

Posted by Filed Under Bird House Feeder with 4 Comments

I know you are supposed to remove the nests from bird houses yearly but I am not sure what time of the year I am supposed to do this. We have two bird houses- one where some wrens come every year and the other chickadees usually build a nest in but don’t usually stay. I just want to know what month to remove the nests and if I really need to remove them at all.

Kelly gave us this whimsical cats head bird house a number of years ago. It has hung over our outdoor diner table since. Last year a house wren family raised their children in the “nest box” providing great entertainment as we watched the parents care for their children. Here is a video this springs hose wren family.

From the Porch – House Wren – Maggie Valley – NC

Watch the parent “house wrens” bring food from nature to their little ones within a gourd birdhouse upon the porch. The birds have worms and spiders in their bills as they come in to feed their young. Hear the sounds of the young calling for their food and the chirps of their parents alerting that they are on their way. This is birdwatching at its simplest. 2 min. Bird House Inspection

It was home inspection day for the Wrens. I made this bird house in my pottery class and just hung it last week. I thought it would not have any takers until next spring but lo and behold this little Wren found it this morning and was singing its praises. If you listen closely you can hear my cat, Idgey, welcoming the new family!
