Water bottle greenhouse/Bird feeder?

i saw a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1XBSoovQtY) of rcycling 2 litter bottles and i have questions.
1.What does the cotton for the mini greenhouse do?does water travel through the cotton? can i use some other fabric for this?
2.what kind of food can i use for the birdhouse? what can i use to give to the birds since i dont have any birdseed.
what?
i dont get it!

Hummingbirds are fun, entertaining, full of energy and it’s easy to attract hummingbirds.
The fabric acts as a "wick" to allow water to flow from the reservoir to the soil above. Not really a greenhouse but rather a self watering plant container.
The bird feeder design is terrible. While it is a good idea to re-cycle, it is always not a good re-cycle idea.
