who knows what type of bird this is?

July 4, 2010 Bird House Feeder

okay. story? we were hanging out around in my house, when my little brother decided to go outside. he saw something black on our wooden fence, but he thought it was just paint. then it started flapping! he heard it flapping and when he looked over he saw it flapping its wings. he ran in to tell me, and i went to tell my dad. my dad went and grabbed some gloves and came outside with us. the poor thing was traumatized! it was flapping consistently and it’s right leg and right wing were stuck insie the fence! its leg is bleeding and cut but it can fly. so we brought it inside my house and now its kinda just hanging out in my room. it started flying around (i recorded it flying for a while) and a couple of minutes later i went back into the room to go and bandage its leg. we put some antibiotic cream on the cut and wrapped a crayola crayon bandaid on the foot. as soon as i upload the videos onto youtube, ill give you guys the link. but what i wanna know is, what kinda bird it is?
here’s some pictures that i took. i realize that you’ll need the pictures for a closer answer:

Onyx

Onyx

some more description… when it’s in the sun, it’s head kinda turns colors. like it turns blue, purple, green, and black. it’s very faint. its like a multicolored bir. but each feather is like that. here’s some more pictures. the first 3 pics were taken before we bandaged his leg. in the last picture, if you look closely at it’s legs, you’ll see the bandaid:

so does anybody know what kind of bird it is? and dont worry, after it’s fully healed, we’re going to set it free again.

:)
i’ve figured out what it is. it’s a common grackle. thanks.

    just a regular black bird?

it sounds like a crow or it could be a raven.

It depends on where you live. Check out http://www.whatbird.com — you can search birds all over the world by color, shape, size, even wing shape and color patterns.

As mentioned before, it does depend on where you live but I’m assuming at least that you’re over the water in America?! (I’m in the UK) That narrows the birds down a bit. You should note features – eye colour, beak dimensions & colour, feather colour & irridescent plumage, tail length & shape, any markings under wings, colour on legs, anything else that you can see which could be distinguishing. Verbally, the call can be a very quick give-away for anyone who knows birds – some squeak, some shout, some growl and some, like starlings, can mimic car horns, telephone rings, ambulance sirens etc and a few can even talk with careful training (usually parrots)! Sometimes the way birds fly is a big hint, just look at some different birds and you’ll see swooping, ducking & diving, flap & glide, and various other ‘strange’ movements in the air! So now look at the website given before, and hopefully you’ll be able to narrow it down using that or one of these two links! I see that it’s obviously not too pleased to sharing the room with people so I would make it dark if possible and leave it alone to sleep, which they do a lot. Probably in the morning, if not today, you should be able to release it. If you’re finding that the bleeding won’t stop then go to the kitchen – look for cornflour/Maizena (I don’t know what your brand names would be over there) but it goes solid when wet so it absorbs blood and then blocks any more coming out. Don’t leave the plaster on, the bird will chew it and may eat some. If you rescue another bird with minor bleeding just dust some cornflour on and release it again as soon as you think the bleeding is under control. Good luck and well rescued. Best wishes

YOU NEED TO CALL A REHABBER
it looks in those pics very stressed. it appears to be open mouth breathing, a sign of stress
you are trying to do the right thing but dont have experience.
the birs should not just ‘hang’ out in your room. it needs a quiet place. this thing is wild! you cant throw a wild thing in with humans and expect it to be calm
    CALL A REHABBER

The pictures you posted is of a grackle. Just set it free. They are not nice birds as they will raid other birds nests and eat the young baby birds. I do not like grackles at all.
