Why are only one species of bird coming to my birdfeeder?

May 30, 2010 Bird House Feeder

The birdseed says "wild bird food" and has pictures of a few kinds of birds, including cardinals, but the only kind of bird that i ever see there are house sparrows

However i regularly see robins, woodpeckers, cardinals, and common grackles. Why is it that only sparrows use my bird feeder?

  1. The First Dragon says:

Robins and woodpeckers don’t eat seeds. Grackles eat some seed, but their diet includes a lot of other things too, so they might not be that interested. As for cardinals, maybe there is some specific seed they like best that isn’t in your mix.
Then again, some birds might come when you are not looking.

The majority of birds will like a 2 foot by 2 foot piece of plywood with a frame around the edges to hold some of the wild bird seed mix. Place it on the ground and only give them what they eat in a day otherwise rodents will come to eat what is left. Every night take away what is left until you get a handle on what they will finish.

Try adding a suet feeder as well..it will attract different birds, or try some different kind of bird seed. Thistle attracts finches, sunflower seeds are a favorite of cardinals, etc.
