Why do people let their cats roam and gets angry if anyone does anything!?
July 26, 2010 Bird House Feeder
We have 2 dogs and 2 potbellied pigs. Our yard is fenced in and we work hard to make sure our animals don’t bother no one else. We have bird feeders and houses everywhere because we love to see all the differant birds. But cats come over our fence and kill our baby birds. We have attracted them here and someone thinks their cat can just roam and kill what we have built as our sanctuary. I finally called the law and they said if any animal got into our yard that it was legal to shoot them. I tried telling our neighbors about this and they got angry. It’s alright that their cats kill our birds but we are not suppose to kill their cat? Doesn’t make much sense to me. Only seems fair. Their cat has no right in our yard when we have worked so hard to make sure our animals don’t get in theirs. Why do people think this is alright. I don’t hate carts, but I just don’t want them in my yard. Why don’t people with cats take on more responsibility for their pet? All people don’t want them!
One thing I do control my animals. They all have been trained. The pigs are cleaned up regularly and on their side of the fence there is no one that can live on that side but we do have a privacy fence there. But their yard is cleaned regularly. Our dogs our mainly inside and if not, they are in our yard. I do not see why people think I should put out money to control others peoples animals. We have our fence put up to control ours, and it mostly keeps other peoples animals out, except for cats out of control. And if I did have a cat it would be inside or on a leash because I will not let my animals bother anyone else. They are my babies. Because it is the only responsible thing to do. And when I said I talked to someone about this it was the sheriff. So I do believe he knows the law. Like I said I have nothing against cats and maybe one day I will have one. But I will be responsible with it considering my neighbors would proubly expect me to like I do the rest of them.

Hummingbirds are fun, entertaining, full of energy and it’s easy to attract hummingbirds.

I love all the responses from people that have said "cats roam, it’s what they do." They could not be MORE WRONG! "There is nothing ‘natural’ about a cat being outside. When humans domesticated cats (about 6,000 years ago), they removed them from the wild and changed their ecological role. Cats are no longer wild predators that fit into an ecosystem, but are dependent on humans, receiving the things they need to live from people." It is merely irresponsible pet owners who ALLOW their cats to roam around outside unchecked. Don’t they understand that their cats could be hit by a car, contract diseases, get poisoned, or be killed by other animals?! The average lifespan of an indoor/outdoor cat is only 2-3 yrs. whereas a cat who is kept indoors only can live 12-15 yrs. Wise up people and keep your cats indoors if you care about them!
While I don’t agree with shooting the animal, I think the previous suggestion that you catch the cat and take it to the animal shelter is a good one. Hope you get this problem solved.
omg chill out cats hunt it’s what they do and if you threatened to kill my cat i would be pretty pissedcats roamed and if you have a problem with it move to an area where there isn’t and houses near! Also they aren’t your birds so stop acting like their yours she could complain about you having pigs and their loud noise!
I AGREE MISSFISH SHES RIGHT YANNO!
Kill the cats, the only think they are good for is eating mice on a farm.
and to missfish, what if i let my dogs and animals come and poop in your garden how would you like that? or maybe i will come over and poop on your porch, cuz you think cats should have the rights to do so
shooting a cat is a little hostile dont you think?? It isnt the cats fault by any means..I have 2 cats both stay indoors, but i still dont think it is wrong to allow cats to be outdoors.
i dont know who told you that you can shoot a cat, but i really doubt that is true.
the law sees a cat differently then a dog, which is why we do not have cat leash laws. cats roam, that is just the way it is.
as for your birds, cats can not kill healthy birds, only the old and sick ones. natures house cleaning.
make the bird feeders cat proof, use cat repellents.
you have dogs because yu love to express yourself people get cats so they can express who they are it the circle of life thing. cats will always kill birds maybe you should talk to the owner and think to your self why you get so mad and state those reasons good luck
It’s the same with dogs, people should take responsibility for their animals. You should call animal control and see what they can do about it, I know they helped a lot when we had problems with the neighbor’s dogs. I love animals too, but people should keep their animals under control.
If the cat doesn’t have a collar, trap it and take it to the animal shelter. If it does, turn the hose on it.
You might need to have your birdhouses and feeders on more slender poles that a cat wouldn’t climb — and put your dogs at the base of the poles.
I agree with getting over it. Cats have a natural need to hunt. I’m sure people don’t like your dogs peeing and whatnot in their yards when you walk them, even if you do clean up after them, or hearing them bark, if they do that (and by the way I have 2 cats and a puppy). And I’m sure some people do not agree in having pot bellied pigs as pets, either. If you don’t like it build a higher fence or get some kind of odour or noise repellent. That’s the price you pay for having natural prey in your yard.
I know here in our state, it’s legal to terminate an animal harassing your livestock. However, wild birds are different than livestock.
People SHOULD be more responsible with their cats. Having a cat and letting it roam free is no less irresponsible as a pet owner than having a dog and letting it roam the neighborhood….
The next time one of the cats is in your yard coax the cat over to you. Stick him into a carrier and take him to the local shelter as a stray.
Keeping cats outdoors is irresponsible. They are easy targets for cars, poisons, wildlife, dogs and humans. They also have a significant impact on local bird populations (as you have seen). People often stick their cats outside because they don’t want to deal with a litter box. Well, guess what? I don’t wan to clean cat poop out of my garden!
I feel your pain, but please don’t make the cats pay for their owners stupidity.
I have to agree with you. I love cats (we have three) but we control them very carefully. It is incumbent on the pet owners to control their animals.
I’d try calling animal control though. To me killing a pet is like killing a child, and the situation could get way out of hand.
Seeing as you don’t have a cat, you probably don’t understand the way they think. Cats need to roam. People can’t control what their cats do when they let them out. Cats NATURALLY kill birds.
Don’t want to sound mean but cats are hunters of birds and you did attract the birds and these birds are wild they are not yours they belong to the people who live around you don’t hate the cats this is natural behavior for these critters if possible to move the feeders to high grounds where the cat cant reach? I have one on pole (metal ) the cats cant climb.
Cats (all) roam they have a territory they scope every day and its not alot so you may have to contend with this or move. As far as I know there is no leash law for cats. ITS HARD TO CONTROL CATS LIKE YOU DO A DOG!
It sounds to me like you are being very petty. You are creating a feud with your neighbours over something incredibly childish and trivial.
Birds that happen to fly into your garden are not "your" birds. They are part of the natural fauna of your environment. And it is also natural for cats to try to kill them: their instincts drive them to do it. I can’t comment on the laws where you live, but where I am, cats have a legal right to go anywhere they please and cannot be held liable for damage to property. It is illegal to harm them in any way, not to mention heartless and cruel. Also, you can’t compare a cat’s behaviour to a dog: they are different animals, with different behaviours and are trainable to a different degree.
My advice: try to realize that your dogs and pigs may annoy your neighbours, in exactly the same way as cats annoy you. I have yet to meet a dog, even a well behaved and trained one, that didn’t bark sometimes. Pigs also make noise, and create all kinds of smells. Just because you don’t personally mind those inconveniences doesn’t mean that they don’t bother others. Your neighbours are clearly putting up with this without complaint. You owe them the same courtesy.
Extend, then, to others the same tolerance to others that you would like to be shown yourself. If you are a Christian, remember that Jesus said love thy neighbour, and that extends to tolerating thy neighbour’s cats too. Try to channel the negative hatred you feel towards these poor animals to a good end by doing something constructive with all that vindictive energy, like charity work. I guarantee, you will reap much more positivity and sunshine from it than from threatening your neighbours.
I understand your love for nature and wanting to keep domestic animals and also attract wildlife. But be aware that cats are also wildlife. The birds eat insects, the cats eat the birds, then we eat meat – it’s all part of lifes cycle. If you like nature, you will respect natures way.
Please don’t take your anger out on the cats – it’s not their fault! It’s the ignorant owners fault. There are a lot of ignorant pet owners out there, that’s just the way it is. I mean, get in your car and go for a drive. You will encounter many ignorant drivers on the road. Are you going to shoot every bad driver you come in contact with?
You could try mounting your bird feeder higher so the cats will have a more difficult time getting them.
