Wild birds……?
July 15, 2010 Bird House Feeder
I have lots of wild birds in my area. Mostly sparrows. In my front yard I have a feeder, bath, and bird house. Is there anything more I can give them this spring (mating season)?

Hummingbirds are fun, entertaining, full of energy and it’s easy to attract hummingbirds.

Perhaps a few strips of flannel or some other soft cloth (to line their nest with). Other than food and the bath, try to ensure the area is not going to be visited by cats- domesticated or feral nor by any other creature that may want to enjoy them for lunch rather than simply enjoy having them there (including raptor birds). Birds love high places so if you don’t have any trees, make some kind of homemade wooden structure that would maybe be covered with burlap or another loosely woven fabric and may have hiding places for goodies (like boiled eggs, cereal, wholewheat bread, fruit. etc). If they find a place that’s covered and where they feel secure, they’ll make their nest there and next year, the babies will return to nest again. A friend has mourning doves that nest above his jacuzzi in a piece of art he has hanging on the wall.
Try to get hold of tufts of unspun wool. You can collect this along the wire fences of fields containing sheep. Birds love this to use in their nest building.
