Would this work for pigeons?

August 21, 2010 Bird House Feeder

Thought about this a few days ago, I’ve seen bird houses for various birds, basically standard backyard song birds and even ones for owls….thought of building a bird house for feral pigeons… or at least some kind of shelter and seeing if a pair builds a nest on the balcony of the town house I live in.

There’s a few pigeons that live in my neighborhood and I have read about pigeons who have built nests on people’s balconies.

Think a wooden crate used for shipping/holding wine would be a good ‘nest box’ for a pair of pigeons, also is there anything I can/should do to make it….more, appealing?

The crates are 100% and don’t have any opening on the sides.

They’re a good size and are a bit deep. I think they’d be big enough

no jokes please

hey its a great idea :) i’ve had pigeons for about 6 years now and trust me its amazing to see them grow and their first flight is amazing to watch :D ….anything standard will work..nothing fancy or something…and pigeons can stand coldness but they will get really sick if they get wet, so make sure it is water proof..other than that an average nesting box i use is about 2 feet by 2 feet…something comparable to that size would also do….and your saying its a crate so you should build a slanted piece of plywood or anything on the top so the water wont hold on the roof cause then it can start leaking….thats about it mate have fun and trust me if some do start nesting you wont regret it :) and pigeons are smarter than some people mate…they didnt fly over 500km in the world wars for nothing :) so ya have fun while doing this and i hope it turns out to be a positive adventure

I think it’s a wonderful idea. Just be sure that the pigeons can get in and out easily (they are not the brightest birds on earth…lol). You could try putting some newspaper into it, but the pigeons will bring their own nesting materials.
Be sure that this is something that you’ll want to do, however. You could end up with the pigeons all year, and for a lifetime as the babies will take over the nesting box, and thy will return every year to where they were born.

    Good luck!
